Company Description The Ink & Iron Journal is a premier platform focused on the intersection of military history, strategy, and contemporary issues. Led by Founder and Editor-in-Chief Audrey Sightler and Managing Editor Dr. Jordan Peters, the journal publishes well-researched articles, original analysis, and thoughtful commentary that connect past events to today’s geopolitical, leadership, and cultural challenges. Its editorial arm, Battlefield Pens, extends this mission to social media, sharing stories of strategy, history, and influential figures in American military heritage. The publication values intellectual rigor, curiosity, and compelling storytelling that make history accessible and relevant to diverse readers, scholars, and professionals. Applicants will join a mission-driven team dedicated to exploring lessons from the battlefield and how ideas and innovation shape the future.

Role Description The Contributing Writer is a full-time remote role responsible for producing original, well-researched articles, essays, and commentary aligned with The Ink & Iron Journal’s focus on military history, strategy, and contemporary relevance. Day-to-day work includes proposing story ideas, conducting source-based and archival research, interviewing subject matter experts when needed, and drafting content that blends rigorous analysis with engaging narrative. The Contributing Writer will revise work in collaboration with editors, respond to editorial feedback, and ensure all pieces meet the journal’s standards for historical accuracy, clarity, and tone. The role also involves adapting content for digital platforms, including social media and newsletters, and supporting ongoing editorial series, special features, and thematic issues. Consistent deadlines, strong communication with the editorial team, and alignment with the journal’s mission are essential.

Qualifications

Demonstrated expertise or strong interest in military history, strategy, international relations, or related fields, with the ability to connect historical events to contemporary issues.

Proven writing skills in long-form nonfiction, essays, or analytical articles, including clear structure, compelling narrative, and attention to voice and audience.

Research abilities using primary and secondary sources, academic literature, and credible media, with careful attention to fact-checking and source integrity.

Editorial and revision skills, including openness to feedback, collaboration with editors, and commitment to refining arguments, structure, and clarity.

Digital publishing familiarity, such as experience writing for online journals, newsletters, or platforms like Substack, and basic understanding of audience engagement.

Strong time management and organizational skills, including the ability to work independently in a remote environment and consistently meet deadlines.

Excellent written communication in English, with an ability to explain complex historical and strategic concepts in accessible, engaging language.

Bachelor’s degree in History, International Relations, Political Science, Journalism, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

Pay: $1.00 - $2.00 per hour
