Consulting Food Scientist

Better-for-You Snack Startup

About Us

We are an early-stage Better-for-You (BFY) snack company developing premium products that combine exceptional taste, clean ingredients, and functional nutrition. Our mission is to create snacks that consumers genuinely crave while delivering meaningful nutritional benefits.

We are seeking an experienced Food Scientist to work as a consultant during product development and commercialization. This is a flexible, project-based role with the opportunity to become a long-term strategic advisor as the company grows.

Position Summary

The Consulting Food Scientist will lead the technical development of our product portfolio from concept through commercial production. This individual will partner closely with the founders, ingredient suppliers, contract manufacturers, and nutrition experts to formulate products that deliver outstanding taste, texture, nutrition, shelf stability, and manufacturability.

The ideal candidate has successfully launched multiple packaged food products and understands the unique challenges of scaling products from the kitchen to commercial manufacturing.

Responsibilities

Product Development

Develop and refine snack formulations that align with our nutritional and brand objectives.
Optimize flavor, texture, appearance, and consumer appeal.
Recommend ingredients that balance functionality, nutrition, cost, and clean-label positioning.
Evaluate ingredient substitutions and formulation improvements.

Commercialization

Scale formulations from benchtop prototypes to pilot production and commercial manufacturing.
Work with contract manufacturers (co-packers) to transfer formulations into production.
Troubleshoot manufacturing and processing issues.
Improve production efficiency and product consistency.

Ingredient & Supplier Management

Identify and evaluate ingredient suppliers.
Assess ingredient quality, functionality, availability, and cost.
Recommend alternative ingredients when supply chain challenges arise.
Collaborate with vendors on innovative ingredient technologies.

Quality & Food Safety

Design shelf-life studies and product stability testing.
Ensure products meet food safety and quality standards.
Assist in developing product specifications and manufacturing documentation.
Support compliance with FDA regulations and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).

Innovation

Stay current on emerging ingredients, processing technologies, consumer trends, and functional nutrition.
Recommend opportunities to improve nutritional profile while maintaining exceptional taste.
Identify technologies that create competitive product differentiation.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Partner with founders, marketing, operations, manufacturing partners, and nutrition consultants.
Provide technical guidance during product launches.
Participate in supplier meetings and manufacturing site visits as needed.

Qualifications

Required:

Bachelor's or advanced degree in Food Science, Food Engineering, Food Technology, or a related field.
7+ years of food product development experience.
Experience commercializing packaged consumer food products.
Strong knowledge of food chemistry, ingredient functionality, processing technologies, and shelf-life optimization.
Experience working with co-packers and commercial manufacturing.
Familiarity with FDA food regulations, nutrition labeling, and food safety requirements.
Excellent project management and problem-solving skills.

Preferred:

Experience developing Better-for-You, functional, natural, or clean-label snack products.
Experience reducing sugar, sodium, or saturated fat while maintaining excellent sensory performance.
Experience with plant-based proteins, fiber systems, healthy fats, and functional ingredients.
Existing relationships with ingredient suppliers and contract manufacturers.
Startup or entrepreneurial experience.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal consultant is equally comfortable in a food lab, pilot plant, and manufacturing facility. They combine scientific rigor with practical commercial experience and know how to balance innovation, cost, manufacturability, and consumer appeal.

They are collaborative, resourceful, and excited about helping build a premium snack brand from the ground up.

Engagement Details

Project-based consulting engagement
Flexible schedule
Remote, with periodic travel to manufacturing facilities and product testing sessions as needed
Compensation commensurate with experience and project scope

Success Metrics

Success in this role will include:

Developing commercially viable formulations that delight consumers.
Successfully transferring products to commercial manufacturing.
Achieving targeted product cost, shelf life, and nutritional objectives.
Supporting successful product launches with minimal manufacturing issues.
Building scalable formulation and manufacturing processes that support future product expansion.

Pay: $75.00 - $175.00 per hour
