Part-time or Full-Time Energy R&D Engineer, Remote or In-Person in the Washington D.C. area (Alexandria, Virginia)

Job type: Part-time or Full-time, In-Person or Remote

Number of openings for this position: Ongoing need to fill this role

Benefits: Flexible schedule. Part-time engineers can choose what days and times they work and how much they work. Full-time engineers also can choose what days and times they work, so long as a minimum number of labor hours are worked per month. Both part-time and full-time engineers can set their own schedule.

Industry area: Energy research and development

Location: Remote or in person in the Washington D.C. area, Alexandria, Virginia, 22304, near the intersection of I-395 and Duke Street

Virtual or In-Person? This position can be either a remote or an in-person opportunity. The location is in the Washing D.C. metro area, within the I-495 Beltway, in the Landmark area of Alexandria, Virginia, near the intersection of I-395 and Duke Street.

Candidate duties may include, but may not be limited to:

Collaborate with supervisor to develop engineering computer models of key aspects of the engineering physics, economics and/or environmental impacts of low-carbon energy technologies.
Contribute to research on new, low-carbon energy technology designs.
Review published literature and/or patent databases regarding new energy technologies.
Assist in developing computer models describing the physical embodiment of low-carbon energy technologies.
Investigate the practical economics of new energy technologies, potentially including niche markets and/or possible collaborators, customers, and/or investors.
Help with preparing project files and reports, presentations for clients, and other communication documents for the client, as needed.

Required Qualifications:

A strong, intrinsic, intellectual drive to learn more about the engineering design and operation of new, lower carbon energy technologies. These technologies may include, for example, renewable energy systems, electrochemical systems, and/or energy storage devices.
Enrolled in or earned an engineering or computer science degree from an accredited engineering or computer science program. Relevant engineering disciplines include, but are not limited to, Mechanical, Energy, Chemical, Environmental, Civil, Electrical, and Computer Science engineering.
Completed at least one (1) undergraduate course in thermodynamics (i.e. the physics of energy).
An ability to perform energy-related engineering calculations correctly, without the need for corrections by colleagues or supervisors.
Proficiency with Microsoft software (Word, Excel, Power Point).
3.5 undergraduate GPA or higher.
Very strong attention to detail.
U.S. citizenship is required.

Additional, Useful Qualifications:

Completed at least one (1) undergraduate course in economics.
Completed at least one (1) undergraduate course in material science.
Knowledge of the physics of energy generation and/or storage technologies. These technologies may include, for example, traditional power plants like combined cycle natural gas turbine power plants or electrochemical systems, such as fuel cells, electrolyzers, reversible fuel cells, electrochemical cells, and/or batteries.

Pay Rate: Please propose a pay rate that you feel is commensurate with your educational qualifications and experience.
