Full Job Description

Recognition Physics Institute (RPI) is hiring a research mathematician specializing in mathematical logic, constructive mathematics, and formalization. Recognition Science is formal first-principles framework deriving results across physics, mathematics, an information theory from a single cost-of-imbalance principle, with a large machine-checker core in the Lean 4 proof assistant and an active publication program.

You will help build, harden, and critically stress-test the formal core: turning informal derivations into precise definitions and fully verified proofs, closing gaps, and flagging where an argument does not actually hold. This is a rigorous theory-and-formalization role. We want someone who treats a shaky claim as a problem to prove or cleanly falsify — not a true believer, and not someone who needs mainstream consensus before engaging.

What you'll do

Formalize definitions, theorems, and proofs in Lean 4 (Mathlib-style), building and maintaining a machine-checked library.
Translate informal mathematical and physical arguments into precise statements, and identify hidden assumptions, gaps, or overclaims.
Work constructively where possible — explicit witnesses, computable content, and proofs that avoid unnecessary non-constructive steps.
Contribute to papers, preprints, and technical notes; co-author where you contribute substantively.
Collaborate with physicists, mathematicians, economists, and software engineers to turn rough derivations into verified, reusable formal results.

Minimum qualifications

PhD in Mathematics, Logic, Computer Science, or a closely related field (exceptional) candidates with equivalent research/formalization experience will be considered).
Strong background in at least one of: mathematical logic, proof theory, type theory, constructive/intuitionistic mathematics, category theory, or formal verification.
Demonstrated formalization experience in a proof assistant (Lean, Coq, Isabelle, or Agda), OR a strong pure-logic research record with clear readiness to work in Lean 4.
Evidence of serious research writing (peer-reviewed publications or equivalent).

Strong pluses

Hands-on Lean 4 / Mathlib contributions (public repos, PRs, or libraries).
Constructive mathematics / realizability / homotopy type theory background.
Ability to work across pure logic and applied formalization (physics, economics, or
information theory).
Referee/editor experience; philosophy-of-mathematics background.
Self-directed research; solo or lead-author work.

Culture

The framework is heterodox and you will encounter claims that look unusual against standard training. The right hire is skeptical, rigorous, and constructive — able to formalize a claim until it either verifies or breaks, and to say clearly which.

Pay: $70,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
