Full Job Description

AdaptiveVets Solutions is seeking a seasoned cloud architect to serve as Senior Architect, defining and evolving the technical architecture of enterprise cloud platform services for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

This role ensures scalability, interoperability, and alignment with VA Enterprise Architecture guidelines across a large-scale AWS GovCloud Kubernetes environment supporting hundreds of VA applications and services.

Key Responsibilities

Define, maintain, and evolve the end-to-end technical architecture of the platform, including high-level design (HLD) and low-level design (LLD) artifacts updated each Program Increment (PI).
Provide authoritative architectural guidance on AWS GovCloud, EKS/Kubernetes, microservices, containerized environments, event-driven architectures, and cloud modernization.
Deliver comprehensive architecture packages suitable for non-technical Government briefings and engineering-level implementation.
Ensure all architecture aligns with VA Enterprise Architecture guidelines, VA Technology Reference Model (TRM), and applicable Federal standards.
Lead architectural governance and design reviews, ensuring platform consistency, interoperability, and performance across all tenant environments.
Define integration patterns, API standards, and service mesh architecture for enterprise integration capabilities.
Assess and recommend architectural improvements each PI, identifying optimization opportunities and risk mitigation strategies.
Collaborate with the Maintenance Technical Director, DevSecOps and SRE Technical Director, and Government technical leadership on architecture decisions.
Ensure architecture supports planned platform growth without additional cost.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, IT, or related field (6 additional years of relevant experience may substitute)
15+ years of experience in enterprise cloud architecture for mission-critical systems, including Federal Government programs
Expert-level knowledge of AWS GovCloud architecture, EKS/Kubernetes, microservices, and cloud-native design patterns
Deep experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform), Istio service mesh, multi-region resiliency, and event-driven integration architectures
Demonstrated ability to develop and present enterprise architecture packages to Government leadership
Experience ensuring architecture compliance with NIST, FISMA, FedRAMP, and VA Enterprise Architecture standards

Preferred Qualifications

Experience architecting multi-tenant ATO environments and tiered authorization boundaries in Federal cloud platforms
AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional or equivalent certification
TOGAF 9 or equivalent enterprise architecture framework certification
Experience with event-driven architecture patterns including Kafka/MSK and enterprise event bus design

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or IT (Required)

Experience:

Enterprise cloud architecture for Federal systems: 15 years (Required)

License/Certification:

AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional (Preferred)
TOGAF 9 or equivalent (Preferred)
