Senior Tax Manager (Corporate & Multi-State)

Remote | 1099 Independent Contractor | CPA Preferred

About the Opportunity

We are a growing CPA and advisory firm seeking an experienced Senior Tax Manager to lead corporate tax engagements for complex business clients. This role is ideal for a seasoned tax professional who enjoys solving sophisticated tax issues while mentoring and managing a team of tax preparers.

The initial engagement includes oversight of a large manufacturing client with multiple subsidiaries, consolidated tax reporting, and multi-state filing requirements. As our firm continues to grow, this position will become a key leadership role supporting additional business tax clients across a variety of industries.

This is a remote 1099 contractor position with flexible scheduling and the opportunity for a long-term relationship.

Compensation

Hourly Rate: $120 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

Expected workload will fluctuate throughout the year, with increased hours during tax season and opportunities for ongoing consulting, planning, review, and advisory work throughout the year. This is expected to start off 20 hours a week with additional opportunity to grow hours as desired via taking on addition tax preparation and tax planning clients.

Primary Responsibilities

Technical Tax Leadership

Manage complex federal and state income tax compliance for C corporations, S Corporations, partnerships and affiliated entities.
Review and prepare consolidated federal income tax returns.
Review and oversee multi-state corporate income and franchise tax filings.
Analyze nexus, apportionment, state modifications, and state filing requirements, sales tax if applicable.
Review tax accounting workpapers and supporting schedules.
Research and document complex federal and state tax issues.
Provide practical tax planning recommendations to corporate and individual clients throughout the year.
Identify tax savings opportunities and communicate planning ideas to firm leadership.
Review estimated tax calculations and extension filings.
Assist with tax notices, audits, and state correspondence.
Review depreciation, fixed assets, M-1/M-3 adjustments, and book-to-tax differences.
Collaborate with accounting teams to ensure accurate tax reporting.

Team Leadership

Manage and mentor a team of three or more tax preparers by:

Assigning engagements and monitoring workload.
Answering technical tax questions.
Coaching staff through difficult tax issues.
Reviewing workpapers and tax returns for accuracy.
Ensuring consistency in firm tax procedures.
Providing constructive feedback and mentoring.
Conducting performance evaluations.
Assisting with hiring and onboarding.
Training staff on technical tax matters and firm processes.
Helping build a collaborative, high-performing tax department.

Quality Control & Project Management

Ensure all returns meet firm quality standards before delivery.
Monitor engagement budgets and deadlines.
Maintain tax workflow and project tracking.
Coordinate tax organizers and client information requests.
Ensure timely filing of federal, state, and local returns.
Identify process improvements and workflow efficiencies.
Develop and maintain tax preparation checklists and review procedures.
Assist with implementation and optimization of tax software and workflow systems.

Technical Qualifications

Required

Active CPA license
8+ years of public accounting tax experience.
Significant experience with corporate taxation.
Extensive experience preparing and reviewing Form 1120 returns.
Experience with consolidated corporate tax returns.
Strong multi-state corporate tax experience.
Experience supervising tax professionals.
Ability to independently research complex tax issues.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, client customer service skills
Advanced Excel proficiency.

Preferred Experience

Experience with one or more of the following is highly desirable:

Manufacturing companies
Multi-entity corporate groups
Holding company structures
State apportionment and nexus analysis
ASC 740 income tax provision calculations
Fixed asset and depreciation planning
Research credit and other business tax incentives
International reporting (Forms 5471, 5472, 8858, 1118, etc.)
Mergers and acquisitions
State voluntary disclosure agreements
Tax software such as CCH Axcess, GoSystem, UltraTax, ProSystem fx, Lacerte, or similar
Workflow systems such as Karbon, Canopy, Jetpack Workflow, or TaxDome

Success in This Role

Within the first year, the successful candidate will:

Successfully manage complex corporate tax engagements from planning through filing.
Lead and mentor a team of tax professionals.
Maintain excellent quality control with minimal rework.
Ensure all compliance deadlines are met.
Improve internal tax workflows and review processes.
Serve as the primary technical resource for complex corporate tax questions.
Help strengthen and scale the firm's tax practice through leadership, mentoring, and process improvement.
