Law Firm Accountant – Property Damage / Insurance Claims

Position: Senior Accountant / Law Firm Accountant
Employment Type: Full-Time
Industry: Legal – Property Damage / Insurance Claims

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Accountant with direct experience managing the accounting and financial operations of a law firm handling property damage and insurance claims.

This is not a general bookkeeping position. We are specifically looking for someone who understands the financial operations of a contingency-fee law firm, including client trust accounting, settlement proceeds, attorney fees, case expenses, co-counsel payments, client disbursements, operating accounts, and financial reporting.

The ideal candidate has previously been responsible for the accounting function of a law firm and understands how money moves from case intake through settlement, collection, fee allocation, and final disbursement.

Key Responsibilities

Manage day-to-day accounting and financial operations for the law firm.
Maintain accurate operating and client trust/IOLTA accounting.
Reconcile bank, trust, credit card, and other financial accounts.
Track incoming settlement proceeds and ensure funds are properly recorded and allocated.
Prepare and review settlement disbursement statements.
Calculate attorney fees, case costs, client distributions, and other settlement-related payments.
Track contingency fees and firm receivables by case.
Track advanced case expenses, expert fees, engineering fees, filing costs, deposition expenses, and other litigation-related costs.
Maintain accurate accounting for co-counsel and referral fee arrangements.
Coordinate payments to clients, co-counsel, experts, vendors, and other parties.
Maintain accurate financial records at both the firm level and individual case level.
Ensure client funds are never improperly commingled with firm operating funds.
Perform monthly trust account reconciliations and maintain supporting documentation.
Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable.
Oversee payroll-related accounting and attorney/staff compensation reporting.
Maintain the general ledger and month-end/year-end closing procedures.
Prepare monthly Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow, Accounts Receivable, and management reports.
Develop financial dashboards showing revenue, collected fees, outstanding settlements, case costs, operating expenses, and cash position.
Prepare forecasts and budgets for firm management.
Monitor firm expenses and identify opportunities to improve financial efficiency.
Coordinate with outside CPAs, tax professionals, auditors, banks, and financial institutions.
Maintain organized documentation supporting financial transactions and reconciliations.
Assist management in developing accounting controls and scalable financial procedures as the firm grows.

Property Damage / Contingency-Fee Accounting

The accountant should understand the economics and accounting workflow associated with property insurance litigation, including:

First-party property insurance settlements
Residential property damage claims
Contingency attorney fees
Settlement checks and settlement proceeds
Multiple-payee insurance checks
Recoverable and non-recoverable case expenses
Expert and engineering expenses
Appraisal-related expenses
Litigation costs
Co-counsel arrangements
Referral fees
Client distributions
Attorney fee allocations
Outstanding settlements and receivables
Case-level profitability

Experience working with high-volume property damage litigation is strongly preferred.

Trust / IOLTA Accounting

The successful candidate must have a strong understanding of law firm trust accounting and should be comfortable with:

IOLTA/client trust accounts
Three-way trust reconciliations
Client ledgers
Matter-level accounting
Settlement deposits
Transfers of earned attorney fees
Client disbursements
Outstanding checks
Trust account documentation
Prevention of commingling
Maintaining audit-ready records

The accountant will work with firm leadership and legal counsel to ensure accounting procedures comply with applicable trust-account requirements and firm policies.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Prior accounting experience within a law firm is required.
Prior responsibility for managing or substantially overseeing a law firm's accounting operations.
Experience with contingency-fee practices.
Experience with client trust/IOLTA accounting and reconciliations.
Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting, financial statements, bank reconciliations, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
Advanced Excel or Google Sheets skills.
Strong attention to detail and ability to reconcile complex transactions.
Ability to manage a high volume of financial activity while maintaining accurate case-level records.
Strong organizational and documentation skills.
Ability to work directly with ownership and senior management.

Strongly Preferred

Previous experience with a property damage, first-party insurance, plaintiff-side, or contingency-fee law firm.
Experience managing accounting for a law firm with a significant volume of settlements.
Experience allocating settlement proceeds among clients, attorneys, co-counsel, experts, and vendors.
Experience tracking case acquisition costs and case-level profitability.
Experience implementing or improving law firm accounting procedures.
Experience integrating accounting systems with legal case-management software.
Experience preparing management-level financial dashboards and forecasts.
CPA designation is a plus but law firm accounting experience is more important for this position.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate has previously run or played a senior role in the accounting department of a property damage or contingency-fee law firm and can step into the position with a strong understanding of law firm financial operations.

We are looking for someone who does more than record transactions. This individual should be capable of building financial controls, identifying discrepancies, improving processes, producing meaningful management reporting, and creating a scalable accounting infrastructure as the firm grows.

The right candidate will understand both sides of the position: maintaining extremely accurate books and giving management a clear picture of where the firm's money is, what has been earned, what is still outstanding, what is owed, and how individual cases and the overall practice are performing financially.

Pay: $75,000.00 - $110,000.00 per year
