Full Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Tool & Die Maker to join our manufacturing team. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, building, maintaining, and repairing precision tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures used across our production lines. The ideal candidate possesses a deep understanding of metallurgy, heat treatment processes, mathematics, and blueprint analysis, combined with the hands-on expertise to operate both manual and CNC machinery. You will routinely manufacture and repair parts to tight tolerances, often working to specifications as close as ±0.0002 inches (±0.005 mm).

Duties and Responsibilities

Analyze Technical Documents: Read and interpret complex blueprints, engineering schematics, and CAD drawings detailing strict geometric tolerances.
Precision Machining: Set up and operate conventional machine tools (lathes, mills, surface grinders) to hit critical dimensions within specified tolerances.
CNC Programming: Program, set up, and operate Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machinery for high-accuracy metal cutting and fabrication.
Heat Treating: Perform heat treatment processes on tool steels, including hardening, tempering, and annealing, to achieve specified material hardness (HRC) and durability.
Fabrication & Assembly: Cut, shape, shim, and fit metal blocks to build custom precision tools and progressive dies, ensuring proper clearance and alignment.
Maintenance & Repair: Troubleshoot production issues, dismantle worn dies, and restore components back to original OEM tolerance levels to minimize downtime.
Quality Inspection: Verify dimensional accuracy using high-precision measuring tools like micrometers, vernier calipers, dial indicators, and coordinate measuring machines (CMM).
Test Runs: Conduct test runs with newly built or repaired tooling, inspect the stamped parts for variance, and make micro-adjustments as needed.
Team Collaboration: Work alongside manufacturing engineers and machine operators to optimize production efficiency and tooling setups.
Documentation: Maintain accurate records of tool modifications, heat treat logs, maintenance schedules, and dimension logs.
Safety & Upkeep: Follow all OSHA safety protocols, safely operate high-temperature furnaces, utilize overhead cranes for heavy lifting, and maintain a clean workstation.

Requirements and Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Certification: Completion of a formal Tool and Die apprenticeship or a relevant technical college program is highly preferred.
Experience: Minimum of 3–5 years of hands-on experience as a Tool & Die Maker or Machinist in a high-precision production environment.
Heat Treating Skill: Demonstrated experience safely operating toolroom heat-treat furnaces and utilizing Rockwell hardness testers to verify material specs.
Precision Skills: Proven ability to hold tolerances of ±0.0005" consistently on manual machines and up to ±0.0002" using grinding or precision milling methods.
Technical Skills: Strong proficiency in blueprint reading, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), industrial metallurgy, and industrial mathematics (trigonometry).
Equipment Knowledge: Proven experience with surface grinders, milling machines, engine lathes, heat-treat ovens, and CNC programming.
Physical Demands: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for long periods, work safely around high-heat equipment, and manipulate heavy metal stock with lifting equipment.
Soft Skills: Sharp analytical troubleshooting abilities, high attention to detail, and a high level of independent focus.

This position requires routinely machining and holding tolerances down to +0.0002" without the use of EDM equipment. Please briefly describe a specific tool, die, or component you successfully machined to this level of precision, and what equipment you used to achieve it.
Briefly explain your hands-on experience with the heat treatment of tool steels. What types of tool steels (e.g., A2, D2, O1) are you most comfortable hardening and tempering, and what equipment did you use for this process?
In our toolroom, you will be expected to work independently. Are you able to fully set up and program a CNC mill or lathe from scratch based on a blueprint, or do you require someone else to provide the program and setup sheets?
This role is located full-time at our facility in Carson City, NV. Our targe wage range for this skilled position is $28.00 to $35.00 per hour, depending on your specification toolroom experience. Does this location and compensation range align with your expectation?
Rate your comfort level with reading complex engineering blueprints and applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles on a scale of 1 to 10. Give a brief example of how you use GD&T data to prevent tolerances stack-up during assembly.
