Position Summary
Position Title: Firefighter / EMT
Employment Type: Full-Time
The City of Rhinelander is seeking motivated and dedicated professionals to join our team as a Firefighter/EMT. This position performs fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue operations, fire prevention activities, and other related duties to protect life and property within the community.
Applicants currently certified as EMT-Basic may apply; however, candidates hired at the EMT-Basic level must obtain Wisconsin Paramedic licensure prior to successful completion of the probationary period.
Compensation
- Starting wage: $57,336.36-$60,776.52 (wage determined by EMS licensure)
- Wage after 1 year: $62,548.44-$66,301.56 (wage determined by EMS licensure)
- 9 paid holidays paid at 12 hours of straight time annually
- Longevity bonus starting at 5 years of service and increased every 5 years
- Overtime is time and a half
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Respond to fire emergencies, medical emergencies, rescues, hazardous materials incidents, and other emergency calls.
- Perform fire suppression activities including interior and exterior structural firefighting.
- Provide advanced life support (ALS) or basic life support (BLS) medical care as licensed.
- Operate fire apparatus and emergency vehicles.
- Participate in training drills and continuing education.
- Conduct inspections, fire prevention activities, and public education programs.
- Maintain equipment, apparatus, and station facilities.
- Prepare reports and documentation related to incidents and patient care.
- Perform station duties and other tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Required at Time of Application:
- High school diploma or GED
- Must be 18 years old
- Valid driver’s license (Wisconsin or ability to obtain)
- Wisconsin Certified Firefighter I
- Nationally Registered or State certified EMT-Basic
- Certified Hazardous Materials Operations
- Valid CPAT within 1 month of job offer
- Must obtain residency within 15 miles of the City limits within 6 months of hire date
Preferred Qualifications
- Nationally Registered or Current Wisconsin Paramedic license
- Hazardous Materials Technician level certification
- Wisconsin Certified Firefighter II
- Wisconsin Certified Driver/Operator-Pumper
- Wisconsin Certified Driver/Operator-Aerial
- Wisconsin Certified Fire Inspector
- Previous fire or EMS experience
- Associate degree or higher in Fire Science, EMS, or related field

Schedule
- Shift schedule: 48/96

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Work performed in emergency and non-emergency settings.
- Exposure to extreme heat, smoke, hazardous materials, bloodborne pathogens, and adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment and patients.
- Ability to wear SCBA and full PPE.
- Must meet department physical agility and medical standards.
