The successful candidate will coordinate the work of the custodial team and help provide a safe, healthy, and welcoming learning environment for students, staff, families, and community members.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesHead Custodian ResponsibilitiesProvide day-to-day leadership and coordination of custodial operations within the assigned building.Assign and monitor daily custodial work to ensure district cleanliness standards and operational expectations are achieved.Assist in training, mentoring, and supporting custodial staff, including orientation of new employees.Coordinate building maintenance needs and submit or oversee work orders through the district maintenance management system.Serve as the primary point of contact between the custodial staff, Building Principal, and Facilities Director regarding facility operations, maintenance concerns, and event preparation.Support emergency response, building readiness, and operational planning as directed.Address performance concerns promptly and document issues when necessary.Foster teamwork, accountability, and professionalism within the custodial department.Maintain open communication with the Building Administrator(s) and the Director of Facilities regarding staffing, performance, equipment needs, and building conditions.Oversee the procurement, inventory, storage, distribution, and security of custodial supplies, equipment, and materials to ensure adequate stock levels and efficient building operations.Order custodial supplies, cleaning products, paper goods, and other facility materials in accordance with district purchasing procedures and approved budgets.Coordinate and oversee routine grounds maintenance, including monitoring the appearance and upkeep of school grounds, landscaping, walkways, parking areas, and exterior spaces, and assigning or performing work as needed.Maintain accurate inventory records and monitor supply usage to promote cost-effective purchasing, minimize waste, and ensure operational readiness.Building Cleaning and SanitationClean, disinfect, and maintain classrooms, offices, hallways, cafeterias, gymnasiums, locker rooms, restrooms, and other assigned areas.Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and wash floors, walls, windows, furniture, and fixtures.Replenish restroom and custodial supplies as needed.Collect and dispose of trash, recycling, and waste materials.Follow established cleaning schedules and sanitation protocols.Floor and Facility MaintenanceOperate and maintain custodial equipment, including floor scrubbers, buffers, burnishers, carpet extractors, and vacuum systems.Strip, wax, buff, and refinish floors as directed.Perform routine maintenance tasks and report building maintenance needs to supervisors.Assist with preventative maintenance activities and minor repairs.Grounds and Seasonal ResponsibilitiesAssist with snow removal activities, including shoveling, salting, sanding, and clearing walkways, entrances, and exits.Coordinate, perform, and oversee routine grounds maintenance activities, including maintaining the appearance and safety of school grounds, walkways, parking areas, and exterior spaces. Assist with emergency weather response and building readiness activities.Building Security and OperationsOpen, secure, and lock buildings as assigned.Ensure windows, doors, and building access points are properly secured.Monitor facilities and report safety concerns, vandalism, or maintenance issues.Respond appropriately to emergencies and facility needs.Event and Operational SupportSet up and break down furniture, equipment, and rooms for school and community events.Manage the receipt, storage, organization, and distribution of custodial supplies, equipment, and materials to support daily building operations.
