Position: Chief Executive Officer

Supervisor: Board of Trustees

Summary of Position:

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of EverHeart Hospice (Hospice of Darke County, Inc. dba EverHeart Hospice) serves as the senior executive leader of the organization and is responsible for advancing the mission, vision, values, strategic direction, financial sustainability, quality outcomes, and organizational culture. The CEO provides leadership to all aspects of the organization, ensuring the delivery of exceptional end-of-life and serious illness care while maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements and fostering growth, innovation, community engagement, and operational excellence.

The CEO collaborates closely with the Board of Trustees, senior leadership team, medical leadership, community partners, donors, and stakeholders to ensure the organization fulfills its mission to serve our communities by providing compassionate Hospice and Palliative Care to patients and families experiencing a life-limiting illness

Essential Responsibilities and Performance Indicators

The CEO is responsible for organization performance in multiple areas including:

Strategic Leadership

Lead organizational growth initiatives, including service expansion, market development, and strategic partnerships.
Ensure alignment between mission, vision, values, and operational priorities.
Anticipate industry trends and position the organization to respond effectively to changes in healthcare, reimbursement, and regulation.
Champion innovation, continuous improvement, and organizational transformation.

Organizational Leadership

Engages with team members and other stakeholders for a strong foundation in determining strategic direction, and implementation.
Builds, develops, and inspires a high-performing leadership team.
Manages conflict, fosters a culture of accountability, collaboration, transparency, compassion, and excellence.
Build consensus, is empathetic, shares responsibilities, and values teamwork to achieve the goals of the organization while maintaining strong leadership presence.
Promotes leadership development, succession planning, and workforce engagement.

Quality and Clinical Excellence

Partner with clinical leadership to ensure safe, high-quality hospice and palliative care guided by the core values of compassion, excellence, integrity, and community focus.
Promote a patient and family-centered culture guided by the core values of compassion, excellence, dignity, and respect.
Monitor organizational quality outcomes, patient and family satisfaction, and operational performance indicators.
Support evidence-based practices and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
Ensure the organization consistently achieves regulatory and accreditation standards.

Financial Stewardship

Ensure long-term financial viability and sustainability.
Oversee budgeting, financial planning, forecasting, and performance management.
Monitor key financial indicators and implement strategies to improve organizational performance.
Evaluate growth opportunities, investments, and strategic initiatives.
Steward organizational resources responsibly while supporting mission-driven decision-making.

Governance and Board Relations

Serve as the primary liaison between the Board of Directors and organizational operations.
Keep the Board informed regarding organizational performance, opportunities, risks, and strategic priorities.
Support effective governance practices and Board development
Assist in strategic planning, policy development, and organizational oversight activities.

Community and External Relations

Serve as the primary ambassador and spokesperson for the organization.
Develop and maintain relationships with healthcare providers, referral sources, community leaders, donors, payers, and strategic partners.
Advocate for hospice and palliative care within the community and healthcare industry.
Represent the organization at community, industry, and professional events.

Regulatory Compliance and Risk Management

Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
Maintain organizational readiness for surveys, audits, and accreditation activities.
Promote a culture of compliance, ethics, and patient safety.
Identify organizational risks and implement mitigation strategies.

Mission Advancement

Champion the organization's mission, values, and culture.
Promote initiatives that enhance patient, family, employee, volunteer, and community experiences.
Support philanthropy, community outreach, and mission-related programs.
Ensure organizational decisions are aligned with mission impact and long-term sustainability.

Education and Experience:

Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Nursing, Public Health, or related field preferred.
Bachelor's degree required.
Minimum of five years of progressive experience in health care administration or operations.
Hospice, palliative care, post-acute care, or nonprofit healthcare leadership experience strongly preferred.
Demonstrated experience leading organizational growth, financial performance, and culture transformation.
