Full Job Description

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Clinical Director to provide strategic, clinical, and operational leadership for our behavioral-health programs.

The Clinical Director is responsible for maintaining high standards of care, supervising and developing clinical personnel, overseeing program performance, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory, ethical, payer, and organizational requirements. This position works closely with executive leadership and other departments to strengthen service quality, employee performance, client outcomes, and sustainable organizational growth.

The successful candidate will be an effective clinical leader, mentor, and communicator who can manage competing priorities, address concerns constructively, and build a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and implement clinical strategies, policies, and performance goals that support excellent care and responsible organizational growth.
Oversee the delivery, coordination, and documentation of behavioral-health services.
Maintain clinical programs that are person-centered, trauma-informed, ethical, and consistent with evidence-based practices.
Recruit, interview, onboard, supervise, and retain qualified clinical personnel.
Coordinate staff assignments, caseload distribution, coverage, and scheduling based on client needs, employee qualifications, and program capacity.
Provide clinical supervision, consultation, coaching, and constructive performance feedback.
Support employee training, credentialing, professional development, and continuing education.
Monitor service quality, clinical documentation, treatment planning, incident reporting, and client outcomes.
Conduct or oversee clinical record reviews, quality-improvement activities, and corrective-action plans.
Ensure compliance with applicable Virginia requirements, professional licensing standards, HIPAA, Medicaid and payer requirements, company policies, and accreditation standards when applicable.
Identify and respond appropriately to clinical, operational, compliance, and client-safety risks.
Address employee performance concerns fairly and consistently in partnership with Human Resources and executive leadership.
Assist with clinical budgeting, staffing projections, resource allocation, and program performance reporting.
Collaborate with administrative, intake, quality-assurance, billing, and executive teams to improve service delivery and resolve operational barriers.
Represent the clinical department during audits, licensing reviews, payer reviews, and community or professional meetings as needed.
Perform other leadership duties consistent with the responsibilities of the position.

Required Qualifications

Master’s or doctoral degree in social work, counseling, psychology, marriage and family therapy, or a closely related behavioral-health field.
Current, unrestricted independent clinical license in Virginia, such as LCSW, LPC, LMFT, or Licensed Clinical Psychologist, as appropriate to the organization’s services.
At least five years of progressively responsible behavioral-health experience.
Prior experience in clinical supervision, program management, or departmental leadership.
Strong knowledge of clinical documentation, quality assurance, risk management, professional ethics, and behavioral-health regulations.
Demonstrated ability to supervise, coach, and evaluate multidisciplinary clinical personnel.
Strong leadership, communication, organization, conflict-resolution, and decision-making skills.
Ability to handle confidential information and sensitive personnel or client matters appropriately.
Proficiency with electronic health records, Microsoft Office, and other clinical or administrative systems.

Preferred Qualifications

Virginia approval or credentials to supervise residents or other clinicians working toward independent licensure.
Experience with Virginia DBHDS-licensed services and Medicaid-funded behavioral-health programs.
Experience preparing for licensing, payer, accreditation, or quality-assurance reviews.
Experience managing departmental budgets, staffing levels, performance indicators, and corrective-action plans.
Previous Clinical Director, Program Director, or senior clinical-management experience.

Compensation and Benefits

The anticipated salary range is $90,000–$110,000 annually, based on licensure, relevant experience, supervisory credentials, program scope, and leadership responsibilities.
