Insurance Investigator

Starting Salary Range: $60,278 - $75,000

The State Corporation Commission (SCC) seeks a Life & Health (L&H) Insurance Investigator who has a passion for public service and consumer protection. The L&H Insurance Investigator is part of the Agent Regulation Division within the Bureau of Insurance (BOI), which is responsible for licensing and regulating insurance agents and agencies. The Agent Regulation Division ensures that insurance professionals selling company policies are properly qualified and comply with all statutory and regulatory requirements, as well as acceptable standards of conduct. Through specialized investigations and audits, an Insurance Investigator determines the validity of consumer filed complaints against life, health, and annuity agents and agencies. This full-time hybrid position works in the downtown office on Mondays and frequently travels within the Commonwealth of Virginia and occasionally out of state to conduct investigations. The SCC offers on-the-job training, professional development opportunities, and long-term career growth.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Conduct field investigations and audits of life, health, and annuity insurance agents and agencies to determine compliance with applicable Virginia laws and regulations
Draft correspondence to insurance companies to obtain additional records
Gather, organize, review, and analyze insurance records obtained during investigation
Develop and evaluate strategies to manage multiple investigations, working closely and communicating with staff at all levels
Conduct in depth and tactful interrogations with consumers, witnesses, insurance agents, and insurance agency personnel
Conduct thorough searches using investigative databases, internal resources, internet resources, and public records to locate parties and collect information
Prepare detailed written investigative reports, including all documentation needed to support the violations noted during the investigation
Identify areas of non-compliance and make recommendations regarding the initiation of disciplinary proceedings including case preparation and testifying at hearings
Present cases to counsel as well as to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies
Travel frequently in Virginia and occasionally out of the state, including overnight travel
Assist with licensing applications where the agent reported criminal history
Perform related work as required
