Job Description

General Description: The Library Technology and Reference Specialist has two primary functions:
Provide technology support to users, including coordinating with the IT department to update, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain the library’s technology (computers, software, printers, scanners, assistive technology, etc.). Also, support and enhance user access to information by providing reference and instruction services as well as library outreach. Contributing to the NOVA Libraries social media; creating and updating research guides, manuals, and other instructional objects/tools.

Duties and Tasks:

Provide technology support to users, including coordinating with the IT department to update, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain the library’s IT-managed technology (computers, software, printers, scanners, assistive technology, etc.
Independently maintain the library-owned technology (tablets, laptops, media equipment, etc.).
Serve as a point of contact for technology support in library.
In the absence of a faculty librarian, manages the library.
Coordinate with IT Department and Instruction & Technology Librarian to keep library technology working, up-to-date, and user-centered.
Assist the Instruction & Technology Librarian in the selection and implementation of new technology resources and services.
Support and enhance user access to information by providing specialized reference and instruction services for Nursing & Allied Health students, including appropriate citation and academic integrity services.
Provide in person and online reference services.
Apply independent judgement and decision-making regarding library patrons and services
Collection development, circulation desk services, serving on campus/college committees, managing and maintaining MEC history archives, and other tasks/projects as assigned.

Essential Functions: Contribute to the NOVA Libraries social media outreach as Medical Education Campus representative; Create and update research guides (LibGuides), manuals, and other digital and physical instructional objects/tools (videos, handouts); Provide instruction for students. Work at service desk; Manage and maintain the Medical Education Campus archives, serving as the primary contact for inquiries; Serve on campus/college committees, perform other tasks/projects at the discretion of the Instruction & Technology Librarian and Lead Medical Librarian.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

KSAs:

Ability to process and learn specialized knowledge & skills: i.e., Nursing and Allied Health research; appropriate citation support.
Ability to manage library in absence of a faculty Librarian.
Ability work independently and manage special projects.
Ability to independently create and maintain web pages using standard HTML editors.
Ability to teach information literacy and research skills.
Flexible self-starter and ability to work with a diverse clientele.
Good knowledge of library resources, classification, and circulation services.
Good knowledge of new and emerging technologies.
Knowledge and understanding marketing and outreach methods.
Knowledge of graphic design, video editing and web development software.
Physical ability to reach shelves from 5’ to 8’ in height with a stool and to lift books and computer equipment up to 15 lbs.
Skilled in MS Office.
Strong communication and collaboration skills and the ability to assist people from diverse backgrounds and varying education levels.

Minimum Work Experience:

Experience providing reference and instruction services.
Experience with troubleshooting, repairing, and/or maintaining library’s computers, software, printers, and/or scanners.
Experience in a reference role or demonstrated level of responsibility comparable to a reference specialist.
Experience in customer service.
