Hanover Safe Place (HSP) is dedicated to supporting survivors of Sexual and Domestic Violence and their families by providing shelter, advocacy, and resources. Position Overview
The Shelter Staff/Advocate will assist the Housing Services Coordinator in maintaining the Hanover Safe Place Shelter Program. The Shelter Staff/Advocate provide advocacy to shelter residents, provide crisis intervention and support to residents and hotline callers, and provide hospital accompaniment. Staff also contribute to the daily functioning of the shelter program by completing daily shift tasks, documentation, and administrative duties as assigned.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide general program support and assistance as requested by the Housing Services Coordinator and Executive Director.
- Provide case management services to shelter residents as requested by the Housing Services Coordinator
- Provide advocacy and support to shelter residents with daily needs
- Conduct compassionate, survivor-centered shelter screenings and assessments that prioritize safety, dignity, and choice for individuals seeking shelter services.
- Complete welcoming and respectful intakes with incoming shelter residents, including collaborative needs assessments, supportive completion of intake forms, and clear, empathetic review of shelter policies and procedures to help residents feel safe, informed, and empowered.
- Engage clients in ongoing, extensive safety planning
- Assist clients in accessing resources
- Organize and manage in-kind donations kept in the shelter office, such as food, clothing, etc.
- Assist with managing day-to-day operations of the shelter, including but not limited to, cleaning shelter office, maintaining company vehicle, sorting through inventory, and conducting room checks.
- Transport clients to appointments and community resources.
- Record all work with clients on standard agency tools for documentation and grant reporting.
- Provide crisis intervention and advocacy through crisis calls on the 24-hour hotline
- Answer the agency’s 24-hour hotline when scheduled
- Participate in hospital accompaniment when scheduled
- Participate in all required staff meetings, trainings, and community-based collaborations.
- Provide evening and weekend participation in various capacities including emergency response, training, and public awareness events when scheduled.
- Maintain and contribute to a team environment towards staff and shelter clients of Hanover Safe Place.
- Maintain client confidentiality policy. Maintain high standards of ethical and confidential practices related to the client, financial, and personnel records within the offices of Hanover Safe Place.
Qualifications
- Education and Experience: College degree in human services or social work field or equivalent training, lived experience, and work experience will be considered equally. Experience with shelter programs and a Housing First approach is highly valued.
- Knowledge: Basic understanding of the dynamics and impact of Sexual and Domestic Violence is required. Knowledge of local resources available to survivors of interpersonal violence is preferred.
- Skills: Must possess ability to provide empathetic, non-judgmental support to clients. Computer skills are critical with word processing and data collection program experience being especially helpful. Good written and verbal communications skills are essential.
- Attributes: Must be able to function effectively within a multidisciplinary team setting. Must be flexible with schedule and have reliable transportation. Must be able to work independently and be a self-starter.
- Language: Proficiency in a language other than English, particularly Spanish and/or ASL is preferred and may qualify for a pay differential
- Commitment: Flexibility to work beyond standard hours for client needs and agency events, including evenings and weekends as scheduled.
- Ethics: High standards of ethical and confidential practices for all clients, financial, and personnel records.
- Inclusivity: Demonstrated commitment to inclusivity, respecting diverse backgrounds, abilities, and identities.
Schedule Available:
Weekends, Night Shift and Overnight
Other shifts may be available and/or needed.
Performance Review
The Community & Client Support Staff will receive a 3-month review from the Housing Services Coordinator in the initial year of employment. An annual review will be provided by the Housing Services Coordinator thereafter. Each review will include a self-evaluation process. The first 90 days shall be considered a probationary period.
