Full Job Description

Job Summary: This opportunity is for an Overhead Crane Mechanical Engineer, just outside of Richmond, VA. The Mechanical Crane Engineer is responsible the design, engineering, analysis, and support of overhead crane systems, hoists, lifting devices, runway structures, and custom material handling equipment.

For top dollar, the Ideal Candidate brings 3+ years of mechanical engineering experience, preferably already with overhead cranes.

Key Responsibilities:

Engineering & Design

Design and engineer overhead crane systems, hoists, monorails, gantry and jib cranes, runway structures, and custom lifting solutions; ensure compliance with CMAA, ASME B30, OSHA, and ANSI standards
Perform mechanical and structural calculations including load capacities, wheel loads, stress/fatigue analysis, and deflection
Develop detailed drawings, fabrication packages, BOMs, and assembly documentation using CAD platforms
Support modernization and retrofit projects, and provide engineered repair or replacement recommendations for existing equipment

Project & Field Support

Collaborate with project managers, fabrication teams, field technicians, and vendors throughout manufacturing, installation, and commissioning
Troubleshoot mechanical issues in the field and recommend corrective actions
Review and approve component selections prior to procurement and provide engineering input for estimating and customer proposals

Customer Support

Engage directly with customers on project specifications, technical solutions, and engineering recommendations
Support field inspections, site visits, lift studies, and custom application development; maintain technical documentation for field service teams

Qualifications

Required

Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
3+ years of engineering experience with overhead cranes, hoists, lifting equipment, structural steel, or heavy industrial machinery
Working knowledge of CMAA, ASME B30, OSHA, and related industry standards
Proficiency with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar CAD software
Strong understanding of mechanical systems — bearings, gearboxes, motors, drive systems, and structural analysis
Ability to interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical specifications
Strong communication skills and Microsoft Office proficiency

Preferred

PE license or EIT certification
Experience with FEA, custom lifting devices, or material handling systems
Familiarity with crane controls, VFDs, and electrical integration
Background supporting manufacturing or field installation teams

Working Conditions On-site manufacturing/industrial environment; occasional travel to customer sites required.
