ALKEME Insurance, one of the nation’s fastest-growing independent retail insurance agencies, is seeking an Underwriting Manager (UM) to be a key member of the executive leadership team. This position has enterprise accountability for underwriting strategy, governance, pricing discipline, and portfolio performance.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
10+ years of underwriting experience, preferably in Environmental and General Liability specialty programs, with leadership responsibility.
Proven P&L ownership and financial accountability in underwriting leadership roles.
Strong expertise in distribution management and partner relationships (carriers, brokers, agents).
Demonstrated success developing underwriting strategy, authority frameworks, and governance.
Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder influence skills.
Willingness to travel to New York up to twice per month as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial & P&L Management: Drive profitable growth through disciplined underwriting, pricing, risk selection, and expense management; maintain accountability for portfolio performance and margins.
Carrier & Distribution Leadership: Lead carrier relationships, performance reviews, underwriting strategy, appetite/guideline updates, and profitable growth initiatives; strengthen distribution with carriers, brokers, and agents.
Agent & Market Relationships: Build and maintain strong broker and distribution partner relationships, ensuring underwriting consistency, responsiveness, and market credibility.
Underwriting Governance: Oversee underwriting appetite, guidelines, authority levels, referrals, compliance, documentation quality, and portfolio risk management.
Portfolio Management: Monitor trends, loss drivers, and risk concentrations; implement corrective actions to optimize profitability.
Team Leadership & Talent Development: Develop staffing plans, recruit and retain underwriting talent, and coach teams to drive accountability, consistency, and high performance.
Industry Representation: Represent the company with carriers, brokers, and industry partners as a senior underwriting leader.

Salary range (based on experience): $150,000 - $200,000 + up to $25,000 annual bonus.
