Full Job Description

The laboratory of R. Brad Jones at Weill Cornell Medicine is seeking a full-time Senior Research Scientist to lead innovative pre-clinical and translational animal model studies aimed at developing new strategies to cure Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection.

The Jones Lab (www.bradjoneslab.org) is at the forefront of research seeking to understand—and ultimately overcome—the biological barriers that allow HIV to persist despite effective antiretroviral therapy. Our research focuses on the interactions between HIV-specific T cells, natural killer (NK) cells, and persistent viral reservoirs in people living with HIV – with the goal of developing strategies that harness and enhance immune responses to eliminate infected cells. The Jones Lab is the lead site for the Research Enterprise to Advance a Cure for HIV (REACH), funded through the NIH’s flagship Martin Delaney Collaboratory program for HIV cure research. REACH brings together investigators across multiple institutions to accelerate the pre-clinical and clinical development of promising therapeutic approaches, and provides opportunities for extensive scientific collaboration. The Jones Lab is also the lead site for Innovative Strategies for Personalized Immunotherapies and Reservoir Eradication (INSPIRE) collaboratory, an NIH-funded UM1 program focused on developing tailored approaches to HIV cure. Together, these programs provide an exceptionally rich environment for collaborative, multidisciplinary research spanning basic HIV biology, immunology, therapeutic development, and translational science.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute directly to our cutting-edge research. The successful candidate will lead studies utilizing a unique humanized mouse model of HIV developed by the group, termed the participant-derived xenograft (PDX) model (McCann et al., JEM, 2021). This model provides an opportunity to investigate human immune responses to HIV in vivo and to evaluate promising therapeutic strategies designed to target persistent HIV infection.

The Research Program

The Senior Research Scientist will lead a portfolio of studies testing emerging HIV cure strategies, including engineered immune effectors, novel immunobiologic drugs, and approaches to enhance recognition and elimination of HIV-infected cells. In addition to testing therapeutic strategies, the position will contribute to the continued development and optimization of the PDX model, including but not limited to engraftment of dendritic cells and other immune cell populations and evaluation of vaccine approaches.

Current funded studies include:

Engineered immune effectors for HIV control: amfAR- and NIH R01-funded studies testing engineered HLA-independent T cells (HITs) for control of HIV and genetic engineering strategies to improve their persistence and function in vivo, in collaboration with Drs. Rachel Rutishauser and Justin Eyquem at the University of California, San Francisco.
Antibody-based immunobiologics targeting NK cells: REACH (NIH UM1-funded) studies evaluating novel antibody-based approaches to activate and engage NK cells to recognize and kill HIV-infected cells, in collaboration with Drs. John Mellors, Wei Li, Bernard Macatangay, Josh Cyktor, and the University of Pittsburgh Center for Antibody Therapeutics.
Targeting authentic HIV reservoir clones: INSPIRE (NIH UM1-funded) studies investigating the capacity of CD8 T cells and NK cells to recognize and eliminate “authentic reservoir clones” (Ferreira and Herrera et al., Nature, 2026), in collaboration with Drs. Michel Nussenzweig and Marina Caskey at Rockefeller University.
Enhancing immune recognition of infected cells: ERASE (NIH UM1-funded) study evaluating EZH2 inhibition as a strategy to improve recognition and killing of HIV-infected cells by CD8 T cells (Gramatica and Miller et al., Cell Reports, 2026), in collaboration with Dr. Mirko Paiardini at Emory University.

The Position

This is an academic research position with substantial opportunity for scientific ownership and career development. The Senior Research Scientist will work closely with Graduate Students, Postdoctoral Scientists, and Research Scientists in the lab while receiving direct mentorship from Dr. Jones and a broader mentorship team.

The successful candidate will play a central role in designing and driving experiments, interpreting results, identifying new scientific questions, and determining the next steps for ongoing studies. Rather than serving solely as a technical resource, the Senior Research Scientist will be expected to make substantive scientific contributions to the research program and help advance studies from experimental design through interpretation and dissemination.

The position will involve planning, executing, and analyzing immunology and virology experiments in the context of HIV-1 infection, with opportunities to develop expertise across animal models, cellular immunology, virology, and translational therapeutic research.

The candidate will also have opportunities to present findings at national and international scientific conferences, contribute to manuscripts and other scientific publications, collaborate with investigators across institutions, and develop a research program aligned with their scientific interests and career goals.

Required Qualifications

Approximately 3–5 years of experience conducting scientific research in a field relevant to this position; publications are desirable.
Strong experience with mouse model studies, including mouse colony maintenance, handling techniques, and surgical procedures.
Experience with standard molecular and cellular biology and biochemistry techniques, including RT-PCR, molecular cloning, transformation, transfection, cell culture, genotyping, immunoblotting, and immunofluorescence.
Experience with data management and databases.
Strong critical-thinking skills, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret experimental results and determine appropriate next steps.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with investigators, trainees, and other members of a multidisciplinary research team.
Ability to maintain accurate and complete research records.
Bachelor’s degree in Biological, Chemical, Physical, or related Sciences, or higher.
A PhD in a relevant discipline such as Molecular Biology or Immunology is preferred.
