RADIOLOGY NURSE Job Summary

Possible shifts include Weekdays 7am-5pm, 8am-8pm, Saturdays 7:30am to noon or 8:30am -2:30pm

The nurse in the Department of Radiology has a dynamic and varied role. The major goal of the radiology nurse is to provide quality nursing care to the patient. Skills utilized in his/her job performance include assessment, communication, teaching leadership and management. The nurse insures patient privacy and dignity. The nurse may function in general diagnostics, special procedures, ultrasound, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.ResponsibilitiesThe overall goal of the radiology nurse is to provide optimum patient care utilizing the nursing process. The nurse will assess, identify needs, plan, implement appropriate interventions, document and evaluate outcome.Specific DutiesSpecific duties fall into four categories. They are: Clinical, education, management and communication.Clinical Functions as patient advocate.

Provides direct patient care.
Meets the physical and emotional needs of patient and family.
Assesses and monitors patient condition and initiates appropriate nursing interventions.
Interviews patients for detailed clinical history and documents same.
Assesses the clinical history to insure the absence of any/all contraindications to testing . Confers with radiologist as necessary.
Recognizes situations necessitating cancellation of an examination and notifies attending physician of same.
Provides an explanation of the procedure to the patient/family and answers questions appropriately.
A) Performing I-Stat analysis of Creatinine and prior to administering IV contrast material per Policy for Using I-Stat to Assess Renal Function. B) Administers intravenous contrast material (Diagnostic Department, CT Department, MR Department).
Knowledgeable of possible signs and symptoms of contrast reactions and assists Radiologist if reaction develops or in emergency situation.
Assists radiologist with special procedures and treatments that require professional nursing skills as needed.
Intervenes when a patient develops problems and in emergency situations.
In the event of an emergency, initiates BLS, PALS and ACLS measures. Directs other staff members to assist in same. Notify police/paramedics as appropriate.
Responsible for ongoing assessment of all patients on site. Monitors vital signs and uses all equipment available (monitor, pulse oximeter, 02 equipment) proficiently.
Proficient in use of cardiac monitor/defibrillator. Recognizes EKG changes and works with radiologists to provide quality patient care.
Administers necessary medications efficiently and knowledgeably.
Performs daily phone calls one-day post breast biopsy. Notifies radiologist of any signs and symptoms of infection, bleeding, etc. Documents the same.
Assists with orientation of new nurses.
Attends staff meetings.
Participates in continuing education programs.
Maintains current BLS, PALS and ACLS certifications.

Communication Documents patient status and care given. Utilizes verbal and written communication with physician, physician's office staff, radiologists, technologists, fellow nursing staff (i.e. patient status).

Instructs patient and family.
Assists with proper procurement of consent forms.
Assists when needed with incident reports.

Physical Efforts Lifting and moving of patients and equipment. Continual walking and standing.

Is a graduate of an accredited nursing school.
Holds current licensure in the state of employment.
Has at least five years of experience. Critical care experience is preferred.
MUST HAVE current BLS, PALS and ACLS certification.

e. Works effectively with a variety of professional and ancillary personnel.

f. Has general knowledge of all areas of nursing practice.

g. Demonstrates mature judgment, initiative and proficiency in nursing skills.

h. Is able to work without direct supervision.

Shows professional interest through self-development, continuing education and involvement in professional organizations.

j. Is knowledgeable in physical assessment, aseptic techniques, IV skills, contrasts used in office and

medications used in office.

k. Has some knowledge of radiology procedures and radiation safety.

l. Presents a positive attitude and a professional appearance.

Hazards

Very low risk of exposure to radiation, possible exposure to electrical hazards, exposure to communicable diseases and personal injury. These hazards are minimal with proper safety awareness and precautions.

Accountability

Reports to Nurse Manager.

Pay: $45.00 - $52.00 per hour
