Position Overview
The Construction Estimator / Project Manager is responsible for managing the entire pre-construction and project management lifecycle for LTJ's steel fabrication projects. This role combines estimating, project evaluation, contract management, client relations, and project oversight to ensure successful project delivery from bid review through completion.
The ideal candidate is experienced in construction estimating, understands steel fabrication workflows, and possesses strong project management and business development skills. This individual will play a key role in expanding LTJ's project portfolio while ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and according to client expectations.
Key ResponsibilitiesEstimating & Takeoffs
- Review bid opportunities and identify projects aligned with LTJ's capabilities and strategic objectives.
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for steel fabrication packages.
- Analyze project drawings, specifications, and scopes of work to prepare accurate cost estimates.
- Determine labor, material, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
- Prepare comprehensive bid proposals and supporting documentation.
- Collaborate with internal teams to validate pricing and production requirements.
Project Evaluation & Selection
- Assess project timelines, complexity, profitability, and resource requirements.
- Evaluate opportunities to determine strategic fit for LTJ.
- Present recommendations to company leadership regarding project pursuit decisions.
- Develop and maintain relationships with general contractors, owners, and industry partners.
Contract Management
- Review, negotiate, and finalize contracts, ensuring favorable terms and risk mitigation.
- Ensure contract scope, pricing, schedules, and deliverables are clearly defined.
- Manage change orders, amendments, and contract modifications throughout project execution.
- Maintain compliance with contractual obligations and project requirements.
Project Management
- Oversee projects from award through completion.
- Coordinate project schedules, budgets, procurement, and resource allocation.
- Communicate project requirements to fabrication and field teams.
- Monitor project progress and proactively resolve issues impacting schedule or budget.
- Track milestones and ensure project deliverables are completed on time.
- Coordinate material purchasing, logistics, scheduling, and cost control activities.
- Maintain strong communication with clients and stakeholders throughout project execution.
Business Development
- Actively identify and pursue new project opportunities.
- Build and maintain relationships with contractors, developers, engineers, and industry contacts.
- Participate in networking events, industry associations, and business development initiatives.
- Work closely with company leadership to identify growth opportunities within steel fabrication and construction markets.
Qualifications Required
- 5+ years of experience in construction estimating, project management, or a related role.
- Strong knowledge of construction practices, project workflows, and estimating methodologies.
- Experience performing detailed takeoffs and preparing cost estimates.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Preferred
- Experience in steel fabrication, structural steel, or industrial construction.
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field.
- Experience with estimating software and digital takeoff tools.
- Contract negotiation and change order management experience.
- Business development and client relationship management experience.
