Full Job Description

Certified Peer Support Specialist

Behavioral Health Crisis Center – Idaho Falls, Idaho
(Shift work including days, nights, weekends, and holidays)

The Behavioral Health Crisis Center is a 20-bed voluntary crisis stabilization facility providing 24/7, year-round support for individuals experiencing mental health and substance use crises. Our mission is to provide compassionate crisis intervention, stabilization, and coordinated referrals to treatment providers throughout Idaho Falls and across the State of Idaho.

We are seeking a compassionate, reliable, and recovery-oriented Certified Peer Support Specialist to join our multidisciplinary crisis team. This position primarily supports individuals admitted for behavioral health crises, substance use crises, and social detoxification needs by assisting with immediate stabilization, recovery support, and connection to long-term community resources.

Position Overview

The Certified Peer Support Specialist uses lived experience and professional peer support training to provide hope, encouragement, advocacy, and recovery-focused support to clients experiencing crisis. This role works collaboratively with clinical and medical staff to promote stabilization, resiliency, and engagement in ongoing treatment and recovery services.

Staff Qualifications

Candidates must:

Hold current certification as a Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) or Certified Peer/Family Specialist (CPFS) and maintain all renewal requirements.
Have a high school diploma or GED.
Be self-identified as a current or former consumer of mental health services (CPSS requirement).
Be well-grounded in personal recovery with a minimum of one (1) year in recovery.
Be at least 18 years of age.
Obtain written certification from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare (DHW) or another authorized CPFS/CPSS program.
Complete a minimum of 20 hours of continuing education annually.
Hold or obtain a current Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification.
Hold or obtain current CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) certification.
CPI and BLS/CPR training courses will be provided by the company.
Successfully pass a Criminal History Unit background check, including fingerprinting.
Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills.
Possess basic computer skills, including email and electronic documentation.
Hold a valid driver’s license, maintain reliable transportation, and carry minimum 100/300k liability insurance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Serve as a client advocate and recovery support resource.
Provide emotional support, encouragement, and peer-guided mentorship during crisis stabilization.
Assist clients in developing recovery, coping, resiliency, and self-advocacy skills.
Appropriately share lived recovery experiences to foster hope and engagement.
Build supportive, respectful, and professional relationships with clients.
Deliver culturally responsive and trauma-informed peer support services.
Assist clients with identifying strengths, recovery goals, and community supports.
Support families and caregivers in understanding behavioral health concerns and available resources.
Coordinate care and communication with behavioral health clinicians, primary care providers, and community partners as appropriate.
Participate in treatment planning and multidisciplinary team collaboration when applicable.
Connect clients to community resources, housing supports, treatment services, and recovery programs.
Maintain confidentiality in accordance with agency policy and all HIPAA/state/federal regulations.
Accurately document services and client interactions in the electronic health record (EHR).
Respond appropriately to behavioral health crises and support de-escalation efforts.
Maintain active certification status and required continuing education hours.
Demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Word, email, electronic health record systems, timekeeping software, and other agency-related technology.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in behavioral health, crisis stabilization, substance use treatment, social detoxification, or community recovery settings.
Knowledge of crisis intervention, motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care, and recovery-oriented systems of care.
Ability to remain calm, professional, and supportive in high-stress or crisis situations.
Experience working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team environment.

Work Environment

This position works within a 24/7 crisis stabilization environment and may require:

Shift work including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Interaction with individuals experiencing acute mental health or substance use crises.
Standing, walking, and responding to crisis situations as needed.
Maintaining professional boundaries while fostering supportive peer relationships.
