Albuquerque, NM | Primarily Hybrid/Remote Outside Tax Season | Full-Time
Salary: $95,000–$125,000, based on experience
We are an accounting, tax, and advisory firm serving clients across New Mexico and other states. We are looking for an experienced CPA to take a meaningful leadership role in the next stage of our growth.
This is not a narrowly defined tax-preparation position.
The CPA in this role will have primary responsibility for helping lead our firm-wide accounting operations while also serving as an important local CPA relationship for our longstanding Albuquerque tax clients.
You will oversee recurring accounting services across a portfolio of more than 100 monthly clients, serve as a senior technical resource for accounting and financial reporting matters, and help lead the accountants and bookkeepers responsible for day-to-day production.
You will also work directly with tax clients and our broader tax team. We are not necessarily looking for the firm's deepest tax specialist. We are looking for a well-rounded CPA who can independently handle typical individual and closely held business tax matters, recognize when an issue requires additional technical expertise, and coordinate effectively with other tax professionals.
The right person will be technically strong, comfortable leading others, genuinely interested in technology, and able to take ownership without needing constant direction.
The Role
As our Accounting & Tax Manager, CPA, you will have responsibilities across the entire firm, not just our New Mexico office.
Your primary focus will be the quality, consistency, and effectiveness of our accounting operations across New Mexico and other states.
You will also become an important local CPA presence for our Albuquerque clients, particularly during tax season when several clients prefer traditional in-person service, including document drop-off and face-to-face meetings.
Outside of tax season, the position offers significantly more remote flexibility while maintaining firm-wide responsibility.
What You'll Do Accounting Operations & Technical Leadership
- Help oversee recurring accounting services for a portfolio of more than 100 monthly clients across New Mexico and Virginia
- Serve as the firm's primary technical and operational resource for non-tax accounting matters
- Oversee monthly and quarterly bookkeeping, close, and financial reporting processes
- Review financial statements, reconciliations, adjusting entries, and year-end accounting work
- Ensure client books are complete, accurate, and ready for tax preparation
- Oversee payroll services and help resolve escalated payroll issues
- Oversee sales tax and New Mexico Gross Receipts Tax compliance and assist with more complex or unusual matters
- Oversee 1099 and other recurring accounting compliance processes
- Troubleshoot complex bookkeeping, reconciliation, payroll, accounting system, and financial reporting issues
- Review accounting cleanups, conversions, and year-end adjustments
- Identify accounting or reporting issues before they become larger client problems
- Help ensure recurring work is completed accurately, consistently, and on time
- Establish and maintain review standards and quality-control procedures across the accounting function
- Serve as an escalation point when accounting team members encounter technical or client issues
- Help business owners understand their financial statements and what their numbers mean
Team Leadership
- Lead, support, and develop accountants and bookkeepers across a distributed team
- Review work prepared by other team members and provide clear, practical feedback
- Help manage capacity, priorities, deadlines, and workflow across the accounting function
- Ensure issues are surfaced early rather than discovered after deadlines are missed
- Hold team members accountable while helping them develop professionally
- Work effectively with remote staff and outsourced or offshore accounting professionals
- Help improve coordination between accounting, tax, and administrative teams
- Take ownership of problems and help drive them through resolution
Experience managing remote or offshore accounting professionals is strongly preferred.
Tax & Client Service

- Assist with tax projections and year-end planning
- Identify planning opportunities and potential issues while working with clients
- Support IRS and state correspondence and resolution matters when appropriate
- Communicate tax issues and recommendations to clients in plain English
- Meet directly with Albuquerque-area clients during tax season
- Support traditional Albuquerque tax clients who prefer to drop off documents or meet with their CPA in person
- Conduct virtual meetings with clients across New Mexico and other states
- Help manage deadlines, extensions, outstanding information, and client follow-up during tax season
Process Improvement & Technology
We are actively standardizing and improving how our firm operates across multiple markets.
This person will play an important role in that effort.
You will:
- Help create more consistent accounting processes across the organization
- Identify inefficient, manual, or unnecessarily complicated workflows
- Help implement better processes rather than simply working around broken ones
- Improve documentation so important knowledge does not live only in someone's head
- Help standardize review procedures, recurring workflows, and client service expectations
- Support implementation and adoption of new technology
- Look for opportunities to use automation and technology to improve efficiency, accuracy, and client service
- Help consolidate legacy processes and systems into a more consistent firm-wide operating model
You do not need to have used every platform in our technology stack.
You do need to be comfortable learning new systems and helping others adopt them.
Our environment includes cloud-based tax, accounting, workflow, communication, automation, and client-delivery tools. We are actively investing in technology that allow our professionals to spend less time on repetitive work and more time applying professional judgment.

- Only want to work in tax
- Prefer highly manual or paper-based processes
- Are uncomfortable supervising or reviewing the work of others
- Prefer waiting for detailed instructions before taking action
- Are uncomfortable communicating directly with clients
- Are unwilling to work on-site in Albuquerque during tax season
Why Join Us?
We are actively improving how the organization operates across technology, workflow, accounting services, tax, client experience, advisory services, and team structure.
This role offers something many traditional accounting positions do not:
the opportunity to have meaningful influence over how the firm actually works.
You will have responsibility across the organization rather than being limited to one office or one small group of clients.
You will also have the opportunity to become an important senior CPA relationship for our longstanding Albuquerque client base while working with a broader team and client population in other states.
For the right person, there is meaningful opportunity to take on additional leadership and responsibility as the firm continues to grow.
We value ownership, responsiveness, excellence, continuous improvement, and thoughtful use of technology.
And while tax season is tax season, we believe a successful accounting firm should be designed to operate sustainably for the people who work in it.
Location & Schedule
Outside of tax season, this role can operate primarily remotely.
During tax season, regular on-site/hybrid presence in our Albuquerque office is required because a meaningful portion of our Albuquerque client base prefers in-person CPA relationships, document drop-off, and face-to-face tax review meetings.
The CPA in this role will become an important local presence for those clients while also supporting accounting and tax operations across the broader firm.
This creates a combination of:
local client relationships + remote flexibility + firm-wide leadership responsibility
Compensation
$95,000–$125,000 annually, based on experience, technical ability, leadership experience, and the scope of responsibility assumed.

If you are a strong CPA who understands accounting, can independently handle typical tax matters, enjoys leading people, and is excited about helping build a smarter and more efficient accounting firm, we'd like to hear from you.
