Job Description Summary
The Animal Wellness Supervisor is responsible for providing quality care for all the Center pets and supporting the mission of the MSRPAC. The Animal Wellness Supervisor will ensure that all pets stay healthy during their stay at the Pet Adoption Center.
Main Responsibilities/Functions
Animal Care
- Daily monitor and physically check all cats/kittens/dogs/puppies at the Center to ensure everyone remains healthy.
- Ensure that animal medical needs are identified, animals receive timely medical and surgical care.
- In conjunction with the adoptions, admissions and behavior and facilities, departments, performs daily rounds of kennels to ensure each animal, each day, receives the care and attention they need to safely and efficiently as possible move through the Pet Adoption Center.
- Monitor and administer vaccinations as needed.
- Monitor and administer all prescribed medication by a veterinarian as needed.
- Update all medical information in the animal database software program.
- In conjunction with the Pathway Specialist, process and make decisions on the intake of new animals to ensure health and adoptability, including relinquishments, transfers from local animal control facilities and fosters.
- Refer all health issues to local vets or SNC veterinarian, keeping the Director of Operations and Adoptions Department Supervisor informed.
- Provide transportation for animals to and from MSRPAC, to RCDAS, Animal Hospitals, Veterinarian offices, etc.
- Adheres to MSRPAC’s disease management and safety precautions.
- May participate in humane euthanasia procedures and quality-of-life assessments as assigned and in accordance with organizational protocols and state regulations.
Operations
- In conjunction with the Pathway Specialist, responsible for animal transport from municipal animal control agencies.
- Review budgets and financial reports pertaining to canine and feline medical care.
- Collaborates with the facilities and adoptions department annually, to review cleaning protocols.
- Responsible for updating all socialization boards.
- Work positively with other members of the management team to accomplish department goals.
- May assist with the management and documentation of controlled substances, DEA compliance requirements, and medical inventory as assigned.
Shelter Medical Operations
- Monitor shelter population health and identify disease trends or outbreak concerns.
- Ensure compliance with shelter medicine protocols and disease prevention practices.
- Collaborate with the Director of Operations and veterinary partners regarding medical protocols and treatment plans.
- Maintain appropriate medical supply inventory and notify leadership of supply needs.
- Assist in developing and updating medical procedures and standard operating protocols.
Community Programs
- Oversee and manage the Center's monthly Nail Trim Clinic.
- Coordinate staffing, supply inventory, scheduling, client flow, and clinic procedures.
- Ensure safe handling of animals and positive client experiences.
- Monitor clinic performance and recommend operational improvements.
- Assist with promotion and growth of the Nail Trim Clinic as a community service program.
Administration
- Review all written reports by volunteers/staff regarding the health concerns of pets.
- Meet with volunteers when necessary to discuss the health of the pet.
- Train Adoption Center and Kennel Staff how to give vaccinations, microchips and medications.
- Collaborate with the animal care and adoptions department, ensure that the kennel staff follows cleaning protocols.
- Monitor, review, interpret, and evaluate policies, programs, and procedures.
- Attend and participate in leadership group meetings; maintain awareness of new trends and developments in the field of shelter veterinary medicine; incorporates new developments as appropriate into programs.
- Meets with the Director of Operations to develop long-range programs and regularly review policies and procedures.
- In collaboration with the Director of Operations, hire, train, evaluate, and dismiss supervised staff and volunteers when appropriate.
- Ensure thorough and accurate animal records.
- Assume additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Operations.
- Exhibit the values and philosophy of the Mary S. Roberts Pet Adoption Center.
Supervisory
Staff Leadership & Supervision
- Directly supervise Veterinary Assistants and other assigned staff.
- Create and maintain employee schedules to ensure appropriate staffing coverage.
- Review and approve employee timecards.
- Conduct onboarding, training, coaching, and performance evaluations.
- Monitor staff productivity, attendance, and adherence to organizational policies and procedures.
- Address performance concerns and participate in disciplinary actions in partnership with the Director of Operations and Human Resources.
- Foster a positive, collaborative, and accountable work environment.
- Serve as a resource and mentor for Veterinary Assistants and other animal care staff.
Key Expectations

Qualifications
- Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) in good standing with the State of California.
- Minimum three years of experience in shelter medicine, animal welfare, high-volume spay/neuter, or companion animal veterinary practice.
- Previous supervisory, lead, or management experience preferred.
- Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License and maintain an insurable driving record.
- Strong interpersonal skills. Must be able to relate and confer with the Executive Director, managers, and associate staff in a positive and constructive way; exercises good judgment when dealing with the public and when making decisions in the absence of the Director of Operations and Executive Director.
- Ability to make sound judgments and work independently and in a team setting in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
- Experience in management, animal behavior and shelter operations.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with center veterinarian, veterinary teams, shelter staff, and volunteers.
- Compassionate and patient communicator who can educate veterinary assistants of varying experience levels.
- Comfortable handling sensitive or emotional conversations around medical or end-of-life decisions.
- Proven skills and attention to detail (effective record keeping ability).
- Support the mission of the MSRPAC and be able to professionally advocate the MSRPAC’s position on issues.
- Strong animal handling skills.
- Cooperative, friendly, and helpful attitude with clients and co-workers. Ability to work closely with other employees to ensure a positive, constructive environment within the program or department, and throughout the agency.

Physical & Environment
- Must be able to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear, stoop, bend, squat, kneel, grasp, grip, put fingers together firmly and reach above shoulder level and lift, push or pull 50 lbs for situations of restraining or moving animals and lifting food and animal care supplies, repetitively use hands to operate computers; flex the neck upward and downward; twist the next and the waist.

Animal Welfare Work Environment
