Full Job Description

Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, is accepting applications for a Bus Driver.

Position Title: Bus Driver

Job Classification: Non-exempt

Reports To: Transportation and Facilities Manager

Pay Range: $30.00 - $35.00 per hour

Essential Functions:

Drives school bus for the purpose of transporting students on scheduled routes and to/from school and/or field trips in a safe and timely manner.

Escorts students for the purpose of ensuring the safety and welfare of students.

Monitors students, parents and/or teachers during transit for the purpose of maintaining order and ensuring the safety of passengers.

Fuels assigned vehicle for the purpose of maintaining vehicle in a safe operating condition. Bus should never be left below half a tank of fuel.

Inspects assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior for the purpose of ensuring safety, appearance, and sanitation of vehicle.

Assesses incidents, complaints, accidents and/or potential emergency situations for the purpose of resolving or recommending a resolution to the situation.

Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections (e.g. brake systems, gauges, emergency exits, fluid levels, tire pressure, exterior condition, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safe operating condition of the vehicle and meeting state requirements.

Assists students and other passengers (e.g. seating, special equipment, etc.) for the purpose of providing safe loading and unloading from buses including both emergency situations (including bus evacuations) and normal transport.

Administers first aid for minor injuries for the purpose of providing emergency or necessary care in accordance with state and federal requirements.

Attends meetings, training, etc. for the purpose of maintaining skills and meeting requirements of school bus driver certificate.

Communicates with parents, students, teachers, administrators for the purpose of conveying and/or receiving information.

Annual Bus evacuations to be done in September of each school year.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Transportation and Facilities Manager or Assistant Principal.

Other Laws and Regulations: The California Highway Patrol’s regulations, all relevant laws relating to student transportation (e.g., the Vehicle Code, the Education Code, and the Municipal Codes), and Diocese of Orange bulletins are to be considered part of these qualifications and requirements.

Situations Not Covered by Publications: When a driver has a problem that is not covered by these guidelines or faces a serious or hazardous situation in the field, they shall call Bus Operations Dispatch for instructions either by the two-way radio or by cell phone. When a driver can foresee a problem, they shall discuss what to do in advance with their Bus Supervisor, and/or Assistant Principal.

Qualifications/Experience:

Class B Commerical Driver's License.
Driver must maintain proper training and certifications, which includes the following:
- California Commercial Drivers Handbook, which is available from the Department of Motor Vehicles
- Community (or Standard) First Aid Manual, which is available from the American Red Cross or from your Driver Trainer during renewal

Work Schedule: This is a full-time, 10-month position (student school days) with benefits as outlined in the Employee Handbook. This position is 30 hours per week. Unless otherwise notified, bus driver shift starts at 5:00am.
