Position Summary
We are seeking a Laboratory Operations & Histology Technician to support the daily operations of our laboratory.
This role combines routine histopathology procedures with laboratory operations, specimen processing, quality control, inventory management, logistics, and project coordination.
This is not a research scientist or assay development position. The successful candidate will perform standardized laboratory procedures by following established SOPs while ensuring accuracy, quality, and timely completion of work.
Success in this position requires someone who is organized, dependable, enjoys problem solving, communicates well, and is comfortable working with multiple departments across different countries.
The position involves daily collaboration with Clinical Research Associates (CRAs), Project Managers, Business Development, Logistics, Quality Assurance, and laboratory personnel located in both the United States and our international offices. Regular participation in online meetings and cross-functional project discussions is an important part of the role.
Key ResponsibilitiesHistology & Laboratory Operations
- Receive, accession, verify, label, and organize incoming biological specimens.
- Process tissue specimens according to established laboratory SOPs.
- Perform FFPE tissue processing and embedding.
- Operate a microtome to prepare tissue sections.
- Prepare high-quality microscope slides.
- Perform routine Hematoxylin & Eosin (H&E) staining.
- Assist with Immunohistochemistry (IHC) workflow preparation and slide handling as needed.
- Organize, archive, retrieve, and maintain tissue blocks and slides.
- Assist with handling blood, plasma, serum, urine, swabs, stool, and other biological specimens and ensure quality control on samples received.
- Maintain specimen traceability and chain of custody throughout laboratory workflows.
- Ensure all laboratory work meets internal quality standards.
Laboratory Quality & Documentation
- Perform routine quality control checks on specimens and completed laboratory work.
- Verify specimen integrity, labeling accuracy, documentation, and completeness.
- Maintain accurate laboratory records and electronic documentation.
- Ensure compliance with laboratory SOPs and quality requirements.
- Support internal audits and quality improvement initiatives.
- Identify discrepancies and communicate quality concerns promptly.
- Assist in maintaining audit-ready documentation.
Laboratory Operations & Logistics
- Assemble laboratory collection kits and research kits.
- Maintain laboratory inventory and monitor supply levels.
- Track reagent and consumable expiration dates.
- Prepare domestic and international specimen shipments.
- Package biological specimens using appropriate cold-chain procedures.
- Coordinate dry ice shipments and shipping documentation.
- Maintain laboratory organization, cleanliness, and safety.
- Assist with equipment maintenance records and routine operational tasks.
Project Coordination & Customer Support
- Support customer projects from specimen receipt through shipment and project completion.
- Coordinate activities between laboratory staff, Clinical Research Associates, Project Managers, Logistics, and Quality teams.
- Monitor project timelines and ensure assigned activities are completed on schedule.
- Maintain accurate project records and documentation.
- Communicate professionally with customers regarding specimen status, timelines, and project updates when required.
Cross-Functional Team Collaboration
This role is highly collaborative and requires regular communication with teams across multiple departments and countries.
Responsibilities include:
- Participate in daily and weekly online and in-person meetings with U.S. and international colleagues.
- Work closely with Clinical Research Associates (CRAs) to coordinate specimen collection, processing, shipment schedules, and study requirements.
- Collaborate with Business Development teams to understand customer needs and support new projects.
- Coordinate with Project Managers to ensure timelines and customer expectations are met.
- Work with Logistics teams to manage specimen shipments and resolve shipping issues.
- Partner with Quality Assurance personnel to maintain compliance and continuously improve laboratory processes.
- Communicate proactively regarding project status, challenges, and potential delays.
- Foster a positive, professional, and collaborative working environment across global teams.
SOPs & Continuous Improvement
- Assist with developing, updating, and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, forms, and laboratory documentation.
- Participate in CAPA investigations and quality improvement activities when required.
- Help identify workflow improvements that increase efficiency and quality.
- Assist with onboarding and training new laboratory personnel.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives across laboratory operations.
Required Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Medical Laboratory Science, Histotechnology, Biotechnology, or a related scientific discipline preferred (equivalent experience will be considered).
- 1-3 years of experience working in a histology laboratory, pathology laboratory, clinical laboratory, biobank, or similar laboratory environment.
- Experience performing routine histology procedures such as embedding, microtomy, slide preparation, and H&E staining.
- Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Comfortable working with detailed documentation and following SOPs.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects while maintaining accuracy.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting Immunohistochemistry (IHC) workflows.
- Experience with FFPE tissue processing and block management.
- Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
- Experience with laboratory inventory management and specimen logistics.
- Knowledge of CAP, CLIA, ISO, GCP, or other laboratory quality systems.
- Experience maintaining SOPs and laboratory quality documentation.
- Experience supporting clinical research or pharmaceutical projects.
