ROLE:
Varsity Football Defensive Coordinator
North Cross School, a co-educational, JK3-12 day school with an international boarding program in Roanoke, Virginia, is seeking an experienced Varsity Football Defensive Coordinator for the 2026 season. North Cross is dedicated to providing an enriching educational experience to our students while fostering their personal and athletic growth. Our football program has a long history of success, including securing multiple Division II State Championship titles in the past couple years, and we are committed to maintaining our strong program while providing our student-athletes with a safe and supportive environment in which to grow and develop.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Varsity Football Defensive Coordinator at North Cross School is responsible for developing and implementing defensive strategies and game plans for the boys’ varsity football team as outlined by the Head Coach in order to maximize the team's ability to limit scoring potential and defensive efficiency. He/she instructs athletes in individual and team fundamentals, strategies, and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. The Coordinator also helps set the tone for the development of mission-aligned student leadership skills, character, and the highest standards of respect and sportsmanship.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop Defensive Strategies: Create and develop innovative strategies, schemes, and game plans to maximize the team's ability to limit potential scoring opportunities for the other team and exploit the weaknesses of opposing offense.
Game Planning: Collaborate with the head coach to devise weekly game plans tailored to upcoming opponents. Analyze film and scout opponents to identify their defensive tendencies and vulnerabilities.
Player Evaluation and Development: Evaluate the performance of players during practices and games, identifying strengths and weaknesses to determine the most effective utilization of personnel. Provide feedback and suggestions for improvement and help players understand their position and role on the team.
Computer Skills: Use technologies such as Hudl to capture, analyze, and learn from video and data.
Game Film Study: Analyze game film to evaluate team performance, identify trends, and make necessary adjustments to game plans. Study opponents' game film to identify potential strategies and play calls.
REQUIREMENTS:
Coaching Experience: Coaching experience or participation in football on a high school or college level is preferred.
Safety: Completion of CPR and First Aid training or enrollment in current CPR and First Aid training course.
Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze game film, identify opponent tendencies, and make effective adjustments based on observed patterns.
Leadership & Communication Skills: Should work well with others and be willing to help out with other areas of the team as needed. Must be able to effectively convey strategies and instructions to players and coaches.
Adaptability: Ability to adapt offensive strategies based on the strengths and weaknesses of players, opponents, and game situations.
Decision-Making: Sound judgment and decision-making skills to make effective play calls in high-pressure situations.
Collaboration: Team-oriented mindset with the ability to collaborate with other coaches and staff members to achieve team goals.
Passion for Football: Genuine passion for the sport and a strong desire to stay updated with the latest trends and developments in offensive strategies.
