Full Job Description

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The High School Athletic Director's primary division-level responsibility is to serve as a school-based leader in the planning and implementation of all athletic and student activities.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude other duties if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this position. While this is intended to be an accurate reflection of the current job, management reserves the right to revise the job description. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Responsible for the supervision of all interscholastic programs which are offered at the high school.
Creates an atmosphere of exemplary sportsmanship and respect.
Provides for the efficient handling of all athletic funds with such safeguards as annual budgets, audits, and proper bookkeeping.
Obtains bids and purchases all athletic equipment.
Supervises ticket sales, part-time workers, officials, security personnel, and financial expenses for all home contests.
Requisites stipends for coaches, sponsor(s), and support personnel.
Insists on adequate safety provisions in all sports for both participants and spectators and provides a periodic check of all facilities for safety and suitability.
Provides adequate facilities for visiting teams and officials.
Responsible for maintenance of the buildings and grounds in athletic areas.
Develops effective relations with outside groups, such as Booster Associations and others, and remains the liaison between those associations and the school.
Represents the school at athletic meetings (VHSL, District, Regional, State and athletic conferences and workshops).
Reviews the Master Eligibility List (MEL) of all interscholastic programs to compliance with VHSL eligibility.
Arranges all varsity, junior varsity, district and non-district, for all sports; indicates and publicize dates, sites, and times of contests and reschedules as needed if cancellations occur.
Coordinates practice facilities and establishes reasonable limits for practice time.
Makes necessary arrangements for transporting participants to scheduled athletic events.
Maintains a systematic inventory and accounting of equipment for all sports.
Establishes school rules and regulations governing athletic contests in cooperation with the principal and coaching staff members.
Works cooperatively with the principal to ensure that the coaches of all interscholastic teams know their described duties and responsibilities.
Assists the principal in recruiting and staffing athletic personnel.
Insists upon implicit compliance with all rules and regulations of the school, VHSL, District, and Region.
Provides staff meetings on a regular basis to review school policies and procedures.
Responsible for evaluating coaches.
Assists the principal with the periodic evaluation of each school's athletic program, facilities, and individual coach’s performance.
Insists that the successful program be judged on the merits it offers for participant values: being a member of a team, discipline, cooperation, responsibility, and good sportsmanship.
Monitors distribution of keys to athletic areas.
Provides opportunities for parents to have a clear understanding of athletic policies and procedures (Seasonal Parent Athletic Information meeting, Athletic Student Athlete Handbooks, Newsletter, etc.).
Insists that all athletes guide other students in exemplifying high standards of good sportsmanship and conduct.
Provides sanctioned awards to coaches and participants.
Works with custodial staff to provide for the appropriate coverage for all events scheduled in the schools.
Coordinates and supervises fund-raising activities for athletic teams.
Establishes a positive means of communicating to parents in the event of game/practice cancellations, rescheduled dates, expected return times from road trips, and other upcoming events.
Assures that each head coach provides a proper award presentation program for his/her team.
Assists the principal with special assignments.
Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of high school athletic programs and principles of scholastic athletic management; technical knowledge of athletic equipment operation and maintenance; general knowledge of operation and maintenance of school facilities; ability to effectively plan and establish effective working relationships with others, including coaching staff; ability to objectively supervise and evaluate full and part-time employees; ability to operate personal computer and software programs. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Because of the increasing need for establishing positive role models, elevating self-esteem, and improving public image, the Athletic Director should creatively design and implement opportunities for his/her athletic community which would foster such development. Examples of these opportunities may include but not be limited to: coordinate/sponsor a means of communication between the Athletic Director and student athletes (i.e., Captain's Council); offer leadership training for student athletes that can be practically applied to their teams; develop a student athlete organization focusing on role modeling, mentoring younger groups, and community/school service; maintain a constant attitude of respect for students, faculty, and staff of cultural, religious, and personal or philosophical belief diversity.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university. Must hold or be eligible for licensure as a teacher in the State of Virginia. Considerable experience as a head coach in secondary school programs.

Master’s degree in School Administration/Supervision required, and/or Master’s degree in Sports Management/Leadership.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Frequent walking, standing, light lifting (15-40 lbs.) and other limited physical activities. Occasional lifting of equipment such as audio-visuals weighing up to 50 pounds may be required. Travel to games is required. Occasional attendance at parent conferences, building level meetings and division-wide meetings and training activities beyond normal assigned hours is necessary. Daily personal and close contact with children to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with other staff members, parents, and medical professionals may be required. Contact with community and division-wide level staff may require considerable tact and diplomacy. Frequent direct contact with general public, media, and program participants. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential tasks.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Duties typically performed in a school setting may include: classroom, gymnasium, cafeteria, auditorium, and outdoor recreational areas.
