Substation Construction Manager, Site Superintendent
The Manager, Substation Construction position is responsible for leading and overseeing lead field crews in the construction and maintenance of electrical substations projects, including new construction, expansions, upgrades, rebuilds, and maintenance activities. This you will plan and direct daily work, promote and enforce a strong safety culture, coordinate schedule/materials/equipment, and deliver quality work that meets scope, specifications, customer expectations, field supervision, subcontractors, and vendors to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, approved drawings, utility standards, schedule commitments, and financial objectives.
The position provides leadership to support safe operations, quality workmanship, project performance, and customer satisfaction while fostering strong relationships with customers, industry partners, and internal stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Lead project construction, field supervision, and operations teams to safely and efficiently execute substation construction projects while supporting business growth and customer satisfaction.
Foster a collaborative work environment and resolving conflicts effectively.
Identify and control electrical hazards associated with transmission and distribution voltages in substation work.
Complete daily reporting, including photos and documentation of progress, changes, and decisions
Use short-interval planning tools (e.g., 3-week look-ahead) to forecast upcoming work and constraints
Conduct frequent site inspections to monitor progress, quality, and compliance with scope and specifications.
Maintain a neat, organized, and safe jobsite at the end of each shift and upon completion.
Partner with the Safety Department to report and support investigation of incidents and near misses
Follow to detail costumer construction standard, construction methods, safety requirements, and company technology platforms.
Support business development activities by identifying opportunities, strengthening customer relationships.
Assist with proposal preparation, estimating, project scoping, constructability reviews, outage planning, material forecasting, subcontractor coordination, and pricing strategies.
Ensure compliance with OSHA, NESC, NFPA 70E, utility regulations, customer requirements, and company safety policies.
Oversee project schedules, manpower allocation, equipment utilization, material deliveries, productivity targets, and budget performance.
Monitor project profitability, labor efficiency, change orders, and schedule adherence.
Identify and communicate project risks, operational challenges, resource needs, and financial impacts to senior leadership.
Review and manage contract documents to ensure compliance with legal, commercial, and customer requirements.
Coordinate all phases of substation construction, including site development, grounding, foundations, structural steel, equipment installation, cable systems, testing, commissioning, and project turnover.
Collaborate with engineers, customers, inspectors, vendors, system operators, and commissioning teams to resolve technical and operational issues.
Lead project review meetings focused on safety, quality, schedule performance, cost control, procurement, and customer satisfaction.
Support strategic resource planning across multiple projects, including labor, supervision, subcontractors, equipment, tools, and material logistics.
Qualifications / Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in engineering, Construction Management, Journeyman certification or equivalent substation construction experience or a related field; or a high school diploma with 10 years of equivalent experience in construction management, engineering, or utility construction.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in transmission, substation, and distribution construction within the electric utility industry.
Comprehensive knowledge of substation construction practices, including substation power system components (breakers, switches, bus, CTs/VTs, grounding) and associated protection/communications systems, foundations, structural steel erection, bus installation, major electrical equipment, control buildings, protection and control wiring, testing support, commissioning, and energization activities.
Strong organization and time management skills; ability to plan daily/weekly work and complete field documentation (daily reports/photos)
Ability to read, interpret, and apply construction drawings, one-line diagrams, specifications, utility standards, outage plans, schedules, and contract documents.
Demonstrated leadership ability with professionalism, initiative, and confidence to lead teams, drive operational excellence, and support profitable business growth.
Proven experience managing substation construction projects and leading diverse teams while balancing technical requirements and customer expectations.
Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Proficient in Microsoft 365, project scheduling software, drawing and document management platforms, and other industry-related applications.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build effective relationships at all levels of an organization.
Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to resolve issues at the appropriate level and escalate critical matters when necessary.
Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitive or complex information with professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment.
Valid driver’s license; ability to travel and stay out of town as required
Proficiency operating/working around common construction equipment (skid steers, man lifts, boom trucks, forklifts, backhoes, trenchers) in accordance with safety requirements.
Compensation:
The minimum and maximum annual salary (or hourly rates) that EES is considering for this position at the time of this posting is $130,000 to $180,000 per year.
The potential candidate understand that compensation depends on numerous factors, including the location where the role will be performed, skills required, experience, travel, and market rate. EES aims to reward performance fair pay and benefits. The top of the salary range represents exceptional and/or senior-level positions that meet all required qualifications.
