Hospital Administrator (Executive Director–Level Nonprofit Leadership Role)
Location: Rochester, NY | Onsite, 5 days/week

Salary: $140K-$150K

Relay Recruiting is proud to partner with a well-established nonprofit animal hospital in the Rochester community, seeking a Hospital Administrator to lead its strategic, financial, and operational future.

The Opportunity

The Hospital Administrator will own strategy, P&L, HR, operations, compliance, and development for a complex, mission-driven animal hospital, reporting directly to the Board of Directors and partnering closely with medical leadership. You'll set the vision, build the budget, lead the people strategy, and represent the organization to donors and the community, all while keeping quality patient care and staff wellbeing at the center. This is a role built for someone who moves fluidly between boardroom strategy and hands-on crisis leadership, and who wants their fingerprints on every part of how this hospital runs and grows.

Key Responsibilities

Set and execute the hospital's strategic plan, partnering with the Board of Directors to define priorities and identify growth opportunities.
Own full P&L responsibility, including annual operating and capital budgets, revenue and expense tracking, and financial reporting to the Board.
Lead all human resources functions, from workforce planning and compensation strategy to performance management and succession planning.
Build and protect a culture of accountability, compassion, and collaboration across every shift and department.
Drive hospital operations, ensuring exceptional patient care, strong KPIs, and close alignment with medical leadership.
Oversee facilities, equipment, technology, and emergency preparedness planning.
Steward relationships with existing donors, foundations, and community partners, supporting the organization's long-term philanthropic health.
Ensure compliance with veterinary, nonprofit, OSHA, and employment regulations, and oversee risk management and business continuity planning.
Champion initiatives that address burnout and compassion fatigue, keeping the team resilient in a high-intensity environment.

What We're Looking For

10+ years of progressive leadership experience, including 5+ years in senior management with direct P&L responsibility.
Experience managing organizations of 75+ employees across multiple leadership layers.
Nonprofit executive leadership experience, ideally at a similarly sized organization or larger.
Proven strategic planning and organizational leadership experience, with a track record of leading positive change.
Experience providing executive oversight of HR functions, including employee relations, talent management, compensation, and organizational development, with the ability to build out dedicated HR support as the organization grows.
Sharp financial management skills: budgeting, forecasting, and business analytics.
Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Veterinary Hospital Management, Human Resources, Finance, or a related field (equivalent experience considered).

Bonus Points If You Have:

A Master's degree (MBA, MHA, or related field).
Background in veterinary medicine, healthcare, animal welfare, or another provider-based or 24/7 operating environment.
Experience in fundraising or donor development.
Crisis leadership experience in a fast-paced medical or emergency setting.
Experience building HR infrastructure (handbooks, policies, performance management systems) in a growing organization.
