Excavator Operator / Pipe Layer | $28 to $36/hr + Profit Sharing | Year Round
Run modern iron on a crew that respects skill. Schreiber Excavating is a family-owned sitework contractor in Ontario, NY with a GPS-equipped fleet, profit sharing paid back to the team, and a real path from Senior Tech to Junior Project Leader to Project Leader to Senior Project Leader to Superintendent.
The role
You are the expert on the crew. You run the excavator, lay pipe, shoot grade, and read the prints so the Project Leader can focus on running the job. When the foreman is off site, you keep production, quality, and safety moving. You lead and teach the younger techs. This is a working position: primarily labor with significant operating. Internally we call this seat Senior Sitework Technician; it's the senior guy on the crew.
What you will do
- Underground utility installation (storm, sanitary, water), earthmoving, and site grading
- Road base, foundation excavation and backfill, prep for curbs and sidewalks, erosion control
- Operate excavators to production and quality standards; dozers, loaders, skid steers, and haul trucks as needed
- Set up and run rotary lasers and pipe lasers; use GPS rover and machine control (we will train the GPS if you have the rest)
- Read civil drawings and understand full job scope
- Direct and teach techs on task; keep the crew productive when the foreman is away
Must-haves
- 5 years of excavating field experience (4 absolute minimum) with a sitework, residential, or commercial construction company
- Proven excavator operator (be ready to talk models, hours, and the work you did)
- Read and understand civil drawings
- Set up and use a laser
- Valid driver's license
- Live within about 1 hour of Ontario, NY, or willing to be
- Able to lift 50 lbs and work outside in real Upstate NY weather
- Shows up every day, on time, early
Nice to have (we can train these)
- Dozer experience, GPS fluency, pipe laser, CDL A or B, haul truck or skid steer hours, mechanical aptitude, experience training others
The honest realities
10 hour days are typical. Outdoor work in any weather we will operate in. Jobs are within about 50 miles of Ontario, NY, so you sleep in your own bed. The pace is fast and the standard is high.
Pay and package
- $28 to $35/hr depending on experience
