Full Job Description

COMPANY INFORMATION

Rockford Township General Assistance is a local government agency that is required by the State of Illinois to provide General Assistance (GA) welfare to qualified individuals. General Assistance is provided to eligible individuals living in Rockford Township with no minor children in the household and little to no income. The Township is seeking a qualified individual to provide background checks on applicants and conduct preliminary interviews to determine program eligibility. The Township will provide training for all aspect of the job duties.

JOB DESCRIPTION

As an Intake Representative, you will be responsible for prescreening applicants, data entry and interviewing applicants to determine their eligibility for the General Assistance (GA) program. You will also provide support to the receptionist by answering phones and being the primary backup.

Prescreening applicants and data entry responsibilities will include gathering and then entering personal, financial, criminal and medical information into the welfare database. You will need to use critical thinking and common sense to evaluate data and make additional background checks necessary to determine an applicant’s eligibility.

You will be responsible for conducting intake interviews with applicants seeking General Assistance at 8:00 am each morning. Responsibilities include conducting interviews, reviewing all documents and interpreting the GA Handbook to ensure proper application of GA guidelines when determining an applicant’s program eligibility.

As the backup receptionist, you will cover the front desk during the receptionist’s lunch hour and cover absences related to sickness or scheduled time off.

This role is built for someone who is empathetic, highly organized and communicates well. You need to have a high level of empathy and compassion as you assist applicants who are often navigating highly stressful situations. Great attention to detail and good organizational skills are mandatory as you gather and input information and ensure all paperwork is received in order to determine eligibility. The ability to think critically and make appropriate decisions based on the program handbook is necessary.

JOB TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES

Process inquiry forms by conducting a background check and entering all information into our welfare database
Conduct intake interviews for applicants seeking General Assistance
Determine applicants’ eligibility for the program and issue a denial notice or schedule the next step in the approval process
Understand the social service network in the Rockford area to recommend other resources to applicants as needed
Backup the processes at the front desk and assist in answering the phones

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Office-based, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm (1-hour unpaid lunch, 37.5-hour work week)
Daily interaction with clients experiencing financial hardship, homelessness, unemployment and other social challenges
Business casual office attire

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Degree in social work or related field preferred
Or 2-3 years experience in a social service agency
Ability to speak English is required. ASL, Spanish or French proficiency preferred
