Position Summary
The Shop/Yard Laborer - Sandblaster & Industrial Painting is responsible for supporting fabrication operations by preparing, blasting, cleaning, painting, and handling fabricated steel products and equipment. This position assists with material movement, shop organization, loading and unloading, and maintaining a safe and efficient work environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Yard Operations
-
Load and unload trucks using forklifts, and other material handling equipment.

Organize and maintain the fabrication yard and storage areas.

Assist fabricators, welders, and fitters as needed.

Identify and stage materials for production.
-
Maintain clean work areas and remove scrap materials.
-
Perform general housekeeping throughout the facility.
Surface Preparation
-
Prepare steel for coating by:
-
Degreasing
-
Solvent cleaning
-
Grinding
-
Wire brushing
-
Sanding
-
Masking
-
Operate abrasive blasting equipment to SSPC/NACE surface preparation standards.

Inspect blasted surfaces for cleanliness and profile.
-
Maintain blasting equipment and replace worn nozzles, hoses, and blast media as required.
Industrial Painting
-
Mix coatings according to manufacturer specifications.
-
Apply primers and finish coats using:
-
Airless spray equipment
-
Conventional spray guns
-
Brushes and rollers when required
-
Measure and verify wet film thickness (WFT) and dry film thickness (DFT).
-
Maintain paint equipment and clean spray systems after use.
-
Ensure proper curing times and environmental conditions during coating application.
Equipment Operation
-
Operate forklifts safely.
-
Operate pressure washers and air compressors.
-
Perform routine inspections on tools and equipment.
-
Report equipment defects promptly.
General Responsibilities
-
Following all company safety policies, procedures, and quality standards.

Wearing and maintaining required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Participating in safety meetings, training programs, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Performing other duties as assigned to support business operations.
Education and Experience
-
High school diploma or GED preferred.
-
Previous experience in a manufacturing, construction, fabrication, industrial, or labor-intensive environment preferred.

Experience using common hand tools and power tools is preferred but not required.

Physical Requirements

Lift up to 75 pounds occasionally.

Stand and walk for extended periods.

Climb ladders and work from scaffolding or aerial lifts.

Frequently bend, kneel, squat, and reach overhead.

Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Wear respiratory protection for extended periods.
Work Environment

Manufacturing shop, fabrication facility, and outdoor yard environments.

Exposure to noise, dust, fumes, welding operations, and varying temperatures.

Required use of appropriate PPE, including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, hard hats, and steel-toed footwear as applicable.
