POSITION SUMMARY
The Engineering Specialist provides technical support for assigned manufacturing, engineering, quality, inspection, and process control activities. The primary focus of the role is determined by department assignment, reporting structure, and business need. This role supports optical thin film manufacturing by improving product quality, process performance, documentation accuracy, and problem resolution. All duties require safe work practices, sound judgment, attention to quality and accuracy, and execution with excellence through continuous improvement, performance, integrity, and respect for people and the Company’s mission. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical and Cross-Functional Support
- Provide technical support, training, and cross-functional coordination for assigned manufacturing, engineering, quality, inspection, and process control activities.
- Support assigned department needs, which may include coating process support, equipment troubleshooting, technical documentation, customer documentation, product testing, quality system support (IQA/FQI/QMS), and product disposition.
- Work cross-functionally with Operations, Engineering, Quality, Planning, and R&D to improve product quality, process performance, manufacturing efficiency, and operational execution.
Product, Process, and Data Review
- Evaluate coating runs, product test results, inspection results, and related process data to provide timely feedback and recommend appropriate process, scanning, annealing, mechanical, or quality adjustments.
- Review manufacturing, machine, inspection, and SPC data to assess performance, identify trends, and support recommended parameter or process changes.
- Use manufacturing data, inspection data, and analysis tools to support improvements in coating performance, product quality, yield, throughput, and consistency.
- Support the standardization, maintenance, and improvement of assigned process controls, machine configurations, inspection methods, and procedures to meet production, technical, quality, and customer requirements.
Documentation, Disposition, and Customer Support
- Review customer documents, such as purchase orders, quotes, and drawings, and translate requirements into accurate MES product specifications.
- Provide assigned product disposition within qualification level based on test data, inspection results, customer specifications, and internal requirements; document results and next steps in MES or other required systems.
- Prepare and verify customer documentation, including source inspection records, first article reports, serialization information, product performance data, and other delivery records.
- Perform product testing, gather results, and report data in a compliant format.
- Gather data to support customer concerns, complaints, investigations, and product or process questions.
Investigations, Compliance, and Continuous Improvement
- Assist with troubleshooting equipment, process, inspection, documentation, and quality issues to support production flow and timely resolution.
- Support investigations involving nonconforming material, process variation, quality concerns, and customer issues; lead assigned investigations within qualification level, including data review, root cause, corrective action support, and follow-up documentation.
- Build and maintain working knowledge of product requirements, inspection methods, customer specifications, internal procedures, and applicable standards, including MIL-PRF, ANSI, and ISO requirements.
- Support the development, implementation, and maintenance of technical documentation, standard operating procedures, and process controls.
- Obtain certifications and/or qualifications as required to ensure compliance with industry standards and Company expectations.
- Follow Company quality, environmental, sustainability, and safety policies; identify and escalate safety concerns; and support safe work practices in assigned activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor/management.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline OR high school diploma or equivalent plus 3 years of relevant technical, engineering, quality, inspection, process control, or manufacturing support experience.
- Experience using Excel, MES, inspection systems, SPC tools, or other manufacturing data systems to review trends, compile results, and support technical decisions.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and advanced Excel capability.
- Ability to read, understand, interpret, and follow detailed instructions, work instructions, specifications, and written communications.
- Ability to write clear, accurate, and concise technical or informational correspondence.
- Able to communicate clearly, manage multiple priorities, and work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Team-oriented, collaborative, reliable, and driven to meet goals and improve processes.
- Must maintain satisfactory attendance, including timeliness.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- Experience in thin film manufacturing or a technical manufacturing environment, including optical coating, metrology, inspection, disposition, cleaning, parts assembly, fabrication, or quality support.
- Experience developing or maintaining Standard Operating Procedures, Job Safety/Hazard Analysis, Work Instructions, or other controlled documentation.
- Hands-on experience with metrology equipment, such as spectrophotometers, laser measurement systems, Zygo interferometers, part measurement systems, or similar tools.
- Familiarity with quality, environmental, and safety programs, standards, and regulations such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, Cal/OSHA, and cleanroom requirements.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing methods and tools, including 5S, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work within a manufacturing environment; moderate temperature and noise level, occasionally elevated.
- Ability to remain in a seated or standing position for the duration of the scheduled shift, as required by job duties.
- Ability to handle delicate optical components and precision tools with fine manual control while adhering to contamination control and handling protocols.
- Ability to perform overhead and elevated tasks, including ladder work, while maintaining stability, reach, and control.
- Ability to work in various positions, including reaching, stooping, standing, bending, sitting, kneeling, and squatting for extended periods; able to perform repetitive hand tasks while standing or sitting for up to 10 hours.
- Comfortable working with solvents, cleaning agents, lasers, sharp instruments, and high-temperature equipment while following safety and part handling protocols.
- Visual acuity for close and mid-range tasks, including viewing small components and using a microscope.
- Required to wear a respirator, hairnet, face mask, gloves, and cleanroom suit when necessary.
- Able to work extended hours, including overtime, when required.
- Be able to lift, pull, and push materials and equipment to complete assigned job tasks.
- Must be able to lift and/or move up to 35 pounds on occasion.

Alluxa/Enpro carefully considers a wide range of compensation factors including the background, education, training, and experience required, as well as geographic considerations such as cost of labor, and applicable local and state laws. These considerations can cause offered compensation to vary. The hiring range for this position is typically $28.00-$44.00/hourly. The actual offer will be based on the individual candidate. Bonus and/or incentives may be eligible for this position.
