Full Job Description

FIS, a premier manufacturer and supplier of fiber optic cable assemblies has an immediate opening for a Manufacturing Cost Accountant in its Oriskany, NY headquarters.

The position serves as a key financial resource to Manufacturing by translating production activity, material usage, labor, overhead, and operational performance into meaningful cost information for management decision-making.

This is a full-time position is in an excellent working environment, with the successful candidate reporting to the company CFO.

IMPORTANT: Wage rate will be commensurate with position, shift worked, experience, education, and required skill level.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Maintain and analyze standard and actual manufacturing costs, including materials, labor, overhead, outside processing, and product cost structures.
Maintain standard costs, bills of material, routings, labor standards, and related manufacturing data.
Analyze and report manufacturing cost, production, inventory, and operational variances; investigate significant discrepancies and coordinate corrective actions.
Monitor and reconcile inventory, including raw materials, work-in-process, and finished goods; support physical counts, valuation, and inventory controls.
Support month-end/year-end close, including inventory, manufacturing costs, accruals, cost of goods sold, and related reconciliations.
Partner with cross-functional departments to evaluate cost impacts of new products, processes, materials, equipment, and operational changes.
Support manufacturing budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, and cost-based business decisions, including pricing, make-versus-buy, capital investments, and cost reduction.
Develop and maintain cost accounting reports, procedures, and analytical tools to improve cost visibility, accuracy, control, and profitability.
Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation for reporting, audits, and compliance; perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Cross-Functional Responsibilities

The Manufacturing Cost Accountant is expected to establish effective working relationships with:

Manufacturing: production performance, labor, scrap, rework, efficiency, and process costs.
Purchasing: material pricing, supplier changes, purchase variances, and sourcing decisions.
Engineering: bills of material, routings, product changes, process improvements, and new-product costing.
Inventory/Warehouse: inventory accuracy, transactions, cycle counts, and material movement.
Quality: scrap, rework, nonconformance, and quality-related costs.
Sales/Management: product profitability, pricing analysis, and customer-specific cost considerations.
Accounting/Finance: month-end close, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls.

Required Qualifications

Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field, with experience in cost or manufacturing accounting.
Working knowledge of manufacturing cost principles, inventory accounting, standard costing, and variance analysis.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and attention-to-detail skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting/ERP systems.
Ability to interpret manufacturing data, bills of material, production records, and inventory information.
Ability to investigate discrepancies, communicate findings, and work independently and collaboratively across departments.

Preferred Qualifications

Analyze and report cost, production, inventory, and operational variances; investigate discrepancies and coordinate corrective actions.
Monitor and reconcile raw materials, work-in-process, and finished goods inventory, including physical counts, valuation, and controls.
Support month-end/year-end close, financial reporting, audits, and compliance.
Partner cross-functionally to assess cost impacts of new products, processes, materials, equipment, and operational changes.
Support budgeting, forecasting, pricing, make-versus-buy, capital investment, and cost-reduction decisions.
Develop cost accounting reports, procedures, and analytical tools that improve cost visibility, accuracy, control, and profitability.
Utilize manufacturing ERP systems and apply knowledge of discrete manufacturing operations and cost accounting principles.
