Under administrative direction, this position is responsible for providing coordinative oversight for the State’s Hazardous Materials Response Teams (HMRTs). The incumbent will work with a wide range of partners to coordinate hazardous materials emergency response preparedness, training, and reporting in accordance with State law. This position is also responsible for working with other SFM staff to ensure the timely processing of the recovery of costs associated with HMRT operations and activation.
Additionally, this position is responsible for providing fire code and hazardous materials information, instruction, and consultation to fire and building code officials, public and professional groups, building owners and managers, and other stakeholders. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining communication and cooperation amongst various stakeholders to ensure uniformity of compliance, preparedness and response in accordance with the Minnesota State Fire Code (MSFC) Chapter 50 and other rules, regulations, and standards relating to the storage, handling and transportation of hazardous materials.
This position assists in the investigation of fires involving hazardous materials release and/or fires in buildings where hazardous materials are stored.
Employees may telework up to 50%, depending on the position and operational needs of the division.

The following must be included and clearly stated in your application and/or resume to be considered eligible for this position:

Three (3) years * experience with a fire department, law enforcement agency or emergency management agency.
- NFPA 470/472 Hazardous Materials/WMD Operations Level certificate or equivalent.

Experience referencing and/or reviewing the International Fire Code (or equivalent), International Building Code, National Fire Protection Association Standards for the purpose of ensuring compliance with codes and national fire protection standards.

Fire Investigations Operations level training or equivalent knowledge and/or experience.
-
Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (i.e., Word, Excel, Access, etc).

Possession of a valid Class D driver's license. Towing trailers up to a gross vehicle combination weight of 26,000 pounds may also be required. Required to drive on a regular basis as part of their job duties/assigned a state issued vehicle.

Ability to work cooperatively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and underserved communities.
- Associate's degree in related field may substitute for six (6) months of required experience.
- Bachelor's degree in closely related field may substitute for one (1) year of required experience.

First Responder Inspector certification or equivalent.

NFPA 470/472 Hazardous Materials/WMB Technician certification or equivalent.

Experience referencing and/or reviewing EPCRA, PHMSA and OSHA regulations for the purpose of ensuring compliance with hazardous materials storage and handling requirements.

Fire Investigation Technician level training or equivalent knowledge and/or experience.
Requires occasionally moving and transporting 50-pound items and frequently moving and transporting objects such as heavy tools and heavy file boxes. This job may require positioning of self to move to a significant degree across rough terrain or may involve maintaining a stationary position for extended periods.
