Job Title: Public Safety Dispatcher

Location: Auburn, CA — Placer County Sheriff's Office

Salary: $73,798–$92,164/year (Dispatcher I) | $81,390–$101,628/year, up to $111,668 with incentives (Dispatcher II)

About the RoleThe Placer County Sheriff's Office is hiring for both Public Safety Dispatcher I (entry level) and Public Safety Dispatcher II (journey level). We're filling positions at both levels — apply regardless of your experience, and we'll place you at the level that matches your background.

Our dispatch center is located in the Auburn Justice Center, less than two hours from Reno/Tahoe or San Francisco. The center provides Law, Fire, and Emergency Medical Dispatch services 24/7, and features sit-to-stand ergonomic workstations, a locker room, full kitchen, and quiet room. Current schedule is three 12-hour shifts a week plus an 8-hour shift every other week.

Dispatchers receive and transmit routine and emergency requests for law enforcement, fire, ambulance, and other emergency assistance; monitor public safety radio frequencies; and operate radio consoles and computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems.

Levels We're Hiring For:

Public Safety Dispatcher I (Entry Level) — $73,798–$92,164/year

Entry-level class in the dispatcher series — no prior dispatch experience required
Works under immediate supervision while learning job tasks
Requirements: 2 years of customer service experience involving multi-tasking, competing priorities, and extensive public contact; equivalent to completion of 12th grade
Must complete the P.O.S.T.-certified Basic Complaint/Dispatcher course and the IAED Emergency Medical Dispatch course within 12 months of appointment
CPR certification required by end of probation

Public Safety Dispatcher II (Journey Level) — $81,390–$101,628/year, up to $111,668 with incentives

Full journey-level class — handles the full range of dispatch duties with only occasional instruction
Requirements: Everything above, plus a minimum of 12 months of public safety dispatching experience and completion of the POST Certified Basic Complaint/Dispatcher course (or equivalency exam)
Additional knowledge of dispatch/communications systems, public safety agency terminology, and automated dispatch systems

Pay & Incentives

7.5% night shift differential for swing/graveyard shifts
5% dispatch training pay when assigned training duties
Holiday overtime pay in addition to holiday pay
POST Certificate Incentive: $100/pay period (Intermediate) or $125/pay period (Advanced) — up to $10,040/year in incentives for Dispatcher II
Lateral applicants from other public agencies may qualify for a signing bonus (up to $2,500 total)
13–14 paid holidays/year, 12 paid sick days/year, CalPERS contributions, EAP access

Requirements for All Applicants

Ability to work irregular hours, nights, weekends, and holidays
Ability to multitask under pressure and maintain composure in emergencies
Pass a DOJ fingerprint check, background investigation, medical exam (incl. drug screening), and psychological evaluation prior to hire
U.S. citizenship or legal right to work in the U.S.
