Medication Supervisor – Job Description

Position Summary

The Medication Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the safe administration, storage, documentation, and monitoring of medications within the facility. This role supervises medication aides or med techs, ensures compliance with state and federal regulations, and works closely with nursing, pharmacy, and healthcare providers to maintain high standards of resident care.

Key Responsibilities

Medication Management

Oversee the preparation and administration of medications to residents according to physician orders and facility policies.
Ensure proper medication storage, labeling, and security.
Monitor medication records (MARs) for accuracy and completeness.
Conduct regular medication cart and storage audits.

Staff Supervision

Supervise and support Medication Aides / Med Techs.
Provide training and ongoing competency evaluations for staff administering medications.
Ensure staff follow medication administration procedures and safety protocols.

Compliance & Documentation

Ensure compliance with state regulations, facility policies, and pharmacy guidelines.
Maintain accurate medication administration records (MAR).
Investigate and document medication errors or incidents.
Prepare documentation for inspections and audits.

Coordination of Care

Communicate with physicians, pharmacies, and nursing staff regarding medication orders and changes.
Coordinate medication deliveries and refills with the pharmacy.
Monitor residents for medication side effects or adverse reactions and report concerns.

Quality Assurance

Conduct regular medication audits and quality checks.
Assist with regulatory surveys and ensure medication compliance.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives related to medication management.

Qualifications

Certified Medication Aide / Medication Technician certification (as required by state).
Previous experience administering medications in assisted living, memory care, or healthcare settings.
Supervisory experience preferred.
Strong knowledge of medication administration procedures and safety practices.
Excellent organizational and communication skills.

Ability to maintain confidential medical information
Strong problem-solving and documentation skills

Working Conditions

Must be able to stand, walk, and assist residents as needed.
May involve evening, weekend, or holiday shifts.
