Full Job Description

Special Projects Construction Manager

Lawson SSP Group, LLC.
Sacramento, CA | Full-Time | Exempt | In-Office

Compensation: $124,800-$149,760 per year DOE

Lawson SSP Group is seeking an experienced Special Projects Construction Manager to lead our growing commercial mechanical Special Projects Division.

We are looking for a leader who enjoys developing people, building customer relationships, improving operations, and helping grow a high-performing team. This role balances department leadership with direct involvement in project management, estimating support, and customer development. This is an opportunity to help shape the future of our Special Projects Department.

What You'll Do:

Department Leadership:

Lead the daily operations of the Special Projects Department.
Provide leadership, coaching, and accountability for Project Managers, the Project Engineer, and the Senior Project Coordinator.
Build a collaborative, customer-focused, and results-driven team culture.
Participate in recruiting, hiring, onboarding, and employee development.
Establish department priorities and ensure resources are aligned to support project success.

Project Leadership & Execution:

Personally manage selected strategic, high-value, or technically challenging projects.
Support Project Managers with complex project issues and customer needs.
Monitor schedules, manpower, procurement, subcontractors, and project execution.
Ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to Lawson's quality standards.

Business Development & Customer Relationships:

Develop long-term owner-direct relationships.
Support design-build opportunities.
Partner with customers to develop practical mechanical solutions.
Participate in proposal presentations and customer meetings.
Help identify opportunities for negotiated work and repeat business.
Work closely with company leadership to support the continued growth of the division.

Estimating & Preconstruction Leadership:

Review conceptual budgets and estimates.
Assist with proposal strategy and project pursuits.
Support estimating during peak workload periods.
Improve estimating-to-operations turnover.
Collaborate with Project Managers and the Project Engineer during project startup.

Financial & Operational Performance:

Monitor project profitability, WIP, forecasting, billing, and cost-to-complete.
Review change orders and project financial performance.
Identify operational risks and implement corrective action plans.
Improve departmental processes, reporting, and workflow efficiency.
Support continuous improvement initiatives throughout the department.

Safety & Quality:

Champion Lawson's safety culture.
Participate in periodic jobsite visits.
Ensure compliance with company standards, OSHA requirements, and contract specifications.
Promote quality workmanship and customer satisfaction throughout every project.

What We're Looking For:

Required Qualifications:

7+ years of experience in commercial mechanical construction, HVAC, plumbing, or related construction management.
3+ years of leadership experience managing project teams.
Experience managing commercial mechanical construction projects from preconstruction through closeout.
Strong understanding of estimating, scheduling, procurement, project financials, and construction contracts.
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications:

Design-build and negotiated project experience.
Knowledge of California prevailing wage/public works requirements.
Experience with Spectrum ERP, Bluebeam, Procore, or similar construction software.
