The Campaign for College Opportunity (The Campaign) is seeking a highly organized, collaborative, and creative Digital Communications Associate to support the organization’s mission and strategic communications efforts. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Digital Communications Associate plays a key role in executing communications initiatives that elevate the Campaign’s research, policy priorities, and impact through compelling digital content, publications, multimedia, social media, and web platforms.
Working collaboratively across the communications, research, policy, development, and operations teams, the Digital Communications Associate helps translate complex policy and research into clear, engaging, and accessible communications that strengthen the Campaign’s visibility, expand public awareness, and advance equitable college opportunity for all Californians.
The Organization
The Campaign for College Opportunity is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) broad-based, bipartisan coalition, including business, education, and civil rights leaders, that strives to achieve racial and economic justice in California. We promote a more fair and vibrant economy and democracy through an affordable, accountable, and workforce-connected higher education system that ensures more low-income and historically minoritized students complete degrees that allow them to lead economically prosperous lives. The Campaign maintains offices in Los Angeles and Sacramento.
Position Summary
The Digital Communications Associate supports the implementation of the Campaign’s communications strategy by developing and promoting mission-driven content across digital and print platforms, including publications, web content, social media, email communications, videos, presentations, events, and public awareness campaigns. Working collaboratively across the organization, the Digital Communications Associate helps translate the Campaign’s research, policy priorities, and advocacy efforts into clear, engaging, and accessible communications that strengthen public awareness and advance the organization’s mission.
The Digital Communications Associate is responsible for creating, editing, and curating content; maintaining the Campaign’s website and digital communications platforms; supporting publication layout and design; coordinating editorial and social media calendars; managing communications assets; and assisting with media relations, report launches, and other strategic communications initiatives. The position also monitors and analyzes communications performance to help inform continuous improvement and maximize the reach and impact of the Campaign’s communications efforts.
Responsibilities
Communication & Narrative Implementation (60%)
- Support the execution of narrative-driven, student-centered, mission-aligned communications campaigns, publications, events, and public awareness initiatives across digital and traditional communications channels.
- Write, edit, and proofread compelling communications materials, including website content, email communications, newsletters, blogs, social media copy, media materials, presentations, and other external communications.
- Serve as a supporting editor for written content developed by staff and external contributors to ensure consistency with the Campaign’s voice, style, and messaging.
- Assist in developing talking points, media briefs, presentation materials, spokesperson resources, and other communications tools that support the Campaign’s strategic priorities.
- Coordinate the production, copyediting, layout, and distribution of reports, publications, fact sheets, and other communications materials.
- Support the planning and execution of report launches, public awareness campaigns, events, and other communications initiatives.
- Ensure communications materials reflect the Campaign’s brand standards, editorial guidelines, and commitment to accessible, inclusive communications.
Content Creation & Digital Communications (25%)
Brand & Content Execution
- Produce engaging, on-brand digital and print communications materials, including social media graphics, infographics, one-pagers, presentations, reports, videos, email communications, and other creative assets.
- Attend organizational events, convenings, legislative activities, and other key moments to capture photography, video, and behind-the-scenes content for use across the Campaign’s communications channels.
- Support the development and maintenance of the Campaign’s brand assets, communications templates, editorial resources, and style guides.
- Create internal communications resources, toolkits, templates, and guides that strengthen cross-functional collaboration and information sharing.
- Maintain organized digital asset libraries and communications files using established naming conventions and file management practices.
Social Media & Editorial Planning
- Execute the Campaign’s social media strategy by maintaining editorial and content calendars, scheduling content, monitoring engagement, and supporting campaign execution across Instagram, LinkedIn, Bluesky, Facebook, YouTube, and emerging platforms.
- Create and curate engaging daily content tailored to platform-specific audiences and aligned with organizational priorities.
- Produce short-form video and multimedia content for digital platforms using established brand templates and best practices.
- Monitor social media performance and analytics, identify trends, and recommend opportunities to improve engagement and reach.
- Research emerging communications and social media best practices to support continuous improvement.
General Support (15%)
- Support media relations efforts by assisting with press releases, media advisories, media lists, interview coordination, and other outreach activities.
- Maintain the Campaign’s media, contact, and stakeholder databases and support targeted communications outreach.
- Track media coverage, speaking engagements, and communications metrics, and prepare regular reports and dashboards for leadership and the Board of Directors.
- Maintain and update the Campaign’s website, ensuring content is accurate, current, and aligned with organizational priorities while coordinating with external website consultants as needed.
- Support the management of the Communications SharePoint Hub, editorial calendar, communications templates, and digital asset library.
- Assist with other communications projects and organizational priorities as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, Public Affairs, Graphic Design, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Three years of experience in communications, marketing, public relations, digital communications, or a related field.
- Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills with the ability to translate complex policy and research into clear, compelling, and accessible communications for diverse audiences.
- Strong content creation skills, including writing, editing, proofreading, basic graphic design, and multimedia production.
- Demonstrated understanding of effective storytelling and audience engagement across digital communications platforms.
- Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
- Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Excellent judgment, professionalism, initiative, and a collaborative, solutions-oriented mindset.
- Ability to work effectively with colleagues across departments and interact professionally with organizational leadership, external partners, and stakeholders.

Technical Skills
- Experience with digital content creation and design tools such as Canva, CapCut, Adobe Express, or similar platforms.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
- Experience managing content across major social media platforms, including Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, Bluesky, and YouTube.
- Experience using website content management systems (WordPress or equivalent).
- Experience with email marketing platforms such as Constant Contact, Mailchimp, or similar tools.
- Familiarity with project management and collaboration platforms such as Microsoft SharePoint, Planner, or similar tools.
- Familiarity with social media scheduling and analytics platforms such as Buffer, Hootsuite, or similar tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting communications for a nonprofit organization, advocacy organization, higher education institution, or public policy organization.
- Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat).
- Experience with Google Analytics (GA4), social media analytics, and communications performance reporting.
- Familiarity with media database platforms such as Muck Rack or similar tools.
- Knowledge of accessibility best practices for digital communications, including accessible PDFs, color contrast, and inclusive content design.
- Demonstrated interest in higher education, public policy, educational equity, or nonprofit communications.

This is a hybrid position based in either Los Angeles or Sacramento, with Sacramento preferred. The Digital Communications Associate will be expected to work in person as needed to support organizational priorities, including team collaboration, meetings, events, photography and video capture, and other communications activities. The frequency of in-office work may vary based on location, business needs, and organizational priorities. Occasional evening and overnight travel may be required. The Digital Communications Associate reports directly to the Director of Communications.

Compensation
Annual salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications in the range of $60,000 to $65,000. For regular, full-time employees, our total compensation package includes competitive, equitable base pay and benefits as outlined below:
