ABOUT THE POSITION
The City of Galt is currently accepting applications for ASSOCIATE AND SENIOR CIVIL ENGINEER

Base Pay Increases:
Effective July 1, 2027:
Sr. Civil Engineer - $9,944 - $12,087 monthly
Associate Civil Engineer - $8,925 - $10,850 monthly
ADDITIONAL PAY (UPON ASSIGNMENT AND ELIGIBILITY):

Incentive Pay - Up to 5% incentive for City-approved educational courses.

Longevity Pay - Beginning at 10 years of service, 5%; 15 years of service, 7.5%.

Bilingual Pay - $100 per month.

Cell Phone Stipend- $75 per month.

Medical-in-lieu - Employees who waive the City's medical coverage shall receive $200 per month for employee only, $350 per month for employee plus one, and $500 per month for family.

Vacation Leave- 80 hours per year for the first 4 years of service, 120 hours after 4 years, 160 hours after 10 years, 200 hours after 15 years, and 240 hours after 22 years.

Vacation Credit - Those with 4+ years of prior public agency experience may request to accrue at a rate of 120 hours.

Vacation Cash Out- Eligible employees may cash out up to 80 hours per year.

UNPRESENTED MID-MANAGEMENT POSITION
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
Under general direction, serves as project manager for complex professional engineering activities, including environmental program planning and compliance, design, construction, land development engineering, traffic engineering, water, wastewater, and storm water/drainage resources engineering, and other programs; ensures that functions meet all applicable laws, regulations, and City policies related to the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP), land development, traffic and transportation, and utility infrastructure; provides complex staff assistance to departmental management staff in areas of expertise; serves as subject matter expert in support of other City Departments; and performs related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general direction from the Deputy Public Works Director. Exercises general and direct supervision over assigned staff.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Sr. Civil Engineer: This is the advanced journey-level registered (licensed as a Professional Engineer in the State of California) class in the professional engineering series. Incumbents are responsible for providing professional-level support to assigned management staff in a variety of areas of expertise. Performance of the work requires the use of considerable independence, initiative, and discretion within established guidelines.
Associate Civil Engineer: This is the journey-level registered class (licensed as a Professional Engineer in the State of California) in the professional engineering series, capable of performing a full spectrum of City engineering and project management work. Incumbents are expected to perform project planning, design, review, and construction oversight; including cost estimating, preparation of plans and specifications, and environmental reviews; as well as assisting with other activities and daily departmental operations. Positions at this level are distinguished from the Assistant level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are aware of applicable operating procedures, policies, and engineering standards.
Education and Experience:

Sr. Civil Engineer:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or a related engineering field and must have six (6) years of professional experience with emphasis in local agency residential, commercial, or industrial development projects. The ideal professional experiences include speaking/communicating in front of the public or in a team setting. Documentation of voluntary participation in public speaking courses is strongly preferred.
Possession of an advanced degree is desirable.
Associate Civil Engineer:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or a related engineering field. Possession of an advanced degree is desirable and four (4) years of professional experience in delivery of local agency Capital Improvement Projects (CIP’s) or development/entitlement (residential, commercial, and/or industrial development) projects. Documentation of voluntary participation in public speaking courses is strongly preferred.
Licenses and Certifications:
Senior/Associate Civil Engineer:

Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.

Possession of a valid certificate or registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer, to inspect City construction and development sites, including traversing uneven terrain, climbing ladders, stairs, and other temporary or construction access points, to operate a motor vehicle, and to visit various City and meeting sites; vision to read printed material and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone. This is primarily a sedentary office classification although standing and walking between work areas and to conduct inspections may be required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may work in the field and occasionally be exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical and background investigation, including fingerprinting. Will be required to work in an office setting.
