Full Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Tax Manager to join a public accounting team in California, with a primary emphasis on individual tax engagements. This position is ideal for someone who combines strong technical tax knowledge with sound judgment, client-facing confidence, and the ability to keep work moving efficiently through demanding deadlines. The role offers the opportunity to guide complex return preparation, advise clients on tax matters, and support quality across the practice.

Responsibilities:

Lead the preparation and final review of complex individual income tax filings, including advanced Form 1040 engagements and related schedules.
Advise clients on tax-saving opportunities and filing considerations while maintaining adherence to applicable federal and state tax rules.
Manage return pipelines and seasonal priorities to ensure assignments are completed accurately and delivered on schedule.
Evaluate work produced by entry-level team members, provide constructive feedback, and help develop their technical capabilities.
Serve as a primary point of contact for client questions throughout the tax process, offering clear guidance and responsive support.
Assist clients with tax notices, examinations, and other compliance-related matters by coordinating responses and resolving issues efficiently.
Monitor multiple client engagements at once, balancing deadlines, quality expectations, and service commitments in a public accounting setting.
At least 5 years of tax experience in a public accounting firm environment.
Active CPA or Enrolled Agent designation is required.
Strong background in individual tax compliance, including complex and multi-state filings.
Demonstrated ability to oversee several client engagements and meet competing deadlines effectively.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a client-service-oriented approach.
Experience reviewing tax work and mentoring less experienced staff members.
Familiarity with Lacerte tax software is preferred.
