ASSOCIATE DEAN

Position Statement

Under the direction of the Dean of Nursing, the Associate Dean is responsible for creating and maintaining a safe, healthy, and supportive environment and culture which fosters student success at Jersey College. Appointment to the role of Associate Dean is not the equivalent of appointment to the role of Program Administrator or Program Director as defined in N.J.A.C. 13:37-1.6 or F.S. 464.019, respectively. Appointment to the role of Program Administrator or Program Director may only be made through official notification sent to the Board of Nursing on Jersey College letterhead and signed by the President of the College. The job description of Associate Dean also encompasses other similar positions such as the Admissions Associate Dean.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Mentoring of Students

Manage Student Policies and Procedures

Student Counseling and Retention and Status Change

NCLEX Oversight

Job Responsibilities

Create an environment which fosters faculty and students’ academic growth and guides their professional development

Ensure that students follow school policies and procedures, including but not limited to:

– Starting classes on time

– Limiting break time to the published schedule

– Proper attire is worn in class and at clinical sites

– Appropriate counseling, guidance and support are provided to students

– Manage student disciplinary issues

End of Term

– Meet with and counsel students who have to repeat classes based on academic results

– Meet with and counsel students who have failed out of program based on academic results

Student Status Changes

– Meet with and counsel students who are requesting a Leave of Absence

– Meet with and counsel students who are requesting a course drop

Serve as resource person, mentor and policy interpreter for students experiencing difficulties not resolved with an instructor or advisor

Actively participate in admissions and orientation process, including:

– Interviewing program candidates and making recommendations to Campus Director and Admissions Committee

– Evaluating admission criteria and historical performance and making recommendations for improvement

– Lead student orientation for education department

Assist in student retention, by:

– Providing on campus presence in hallways and classrooms to reach out to students and assure close contact with students

– Managing term retention campaigns and processes to achieve term to term retention goals

– Advising students based on program requirements by developing relationships and providing intrusive support

– Connecting students with the appropriate academic or professional staff to foster academic and personal growth

– Assisting in the development of programs and strategies to improve retention and graduation rates

Coordinating student services related to tutoring and counseling, including:

– Monitoring grade reports based on exam schedule

– Identifying and work closely with at-risk students to develop action plans to improve academic results

– Providing basic skill development and academic support for students through tutoring, study groups, in-class teaching assistance and instructor referral in order to foster the ability to succeed in their program

– Developing counseling and tutoring programs that meet the needs of day, evening and weekend students with diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities

– Facilitating student experience through study skills workshops for current students to achieve continued success

Promote graduation rates and first time NCLEX pass rates by:

– Leading the development, management, and documentation of NCLEX processes, resources, and services for students

– Providing NCLEX and general student skill development and academic support for students through oversight of tutoring, study groups, in-class teaching assistance and instructor referral

– Monitoring progression exams results and coordinating post- exam interviews, including development of individualized remediation plans, planning and next steps, approval and release of students, etc.

– Coordinating NCLEX Advisor Program

– Tracking NCLEX Performance

Perform duties of a faculty member

Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Preferred Qualifications/Competencies:

2+ years of working experience in the area of education

Licenses and Continuing Education Required by Regulatory Bodies

Ability to maintain and report on student information and track record of achieving goals

Exceptional student/customer service, listening, and teamwork skills

An outgoing, approachable style and a passion for helping students succeed

Excellent communication and presentation skills

Plans for maintaining competencies

Preferred Education:

Master’s Degree or Higher in Nursing
