Full Job Description

Role and Responsibilities

The primary role of the coder is to ensure the accuracy of the clinical documentation for each patient. They will monitor and detect risks in the clinic and continue to provide a resolution with the administrative team. This person is also responsible for ensuring we remain in compliance with the current coding guidelines, including any payer specific coding guidelines related to ophthalmology. The coder will be responsible for educating the billing staff, including the physicians, with coding updates relevant to our practice.

Assign codes to diagnoses and procedures, using ICD and CPT codes
Analyzes medical records and identifies documentation deficiencies
Ensure codes are accurate and sequenced correctly in accordance with government and insurance regulations
Follow up with the provider on any documentation that is insufficient or unclear
Communicate with the clinical coordinators regarding documentation
Coordinates with the clinical coordinators to ensure clinical staff receive continuous training on coding and/or billing issues relevant to their positions
Serves as a resource and subject matter expert to other staff members
Coding for all outpatient surgical procedures
Ensure all codes in the EMR are current and active
Researches, analyzes, recommends, and facilitates plan of action to correct discrepancies and prevent future coding errors
Work with billers for any payer specific coding requirements
At a minimum, run reports and perform monthly auditing for MIPS measures
Audits clinical documentation and coded data to validate documentation supports services rendered for reimbursement and reporting purposes.
Handles special projects as requested.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Experience in an ophthalmology clinic, preferably retina, with the above duties is required. Certified Professional Coder or apprenticeship is required.

Preferred Skills

Must communicate both verbally and written in a clear, effective manner. Must be able to effectively multitask in a fast paced environment.
