POSITION PURPOSE
The Assistant Controller is a key operating partner to the Controller and helps lead the integrity, timeliness, and scalability of HDA Truck Pride's accounting function. The role owns critical elements of the close and reporting cycle, strengthens internal controls, supports planning and analysis, and translates financial results into clear business insight.
This position works across HDA Truck Pride and affiliated entities, preserving entity-level accuracy while helping leadership understand the enterprise as a whole. It is well suited for a hands-on accounting leader who can move comfortably between technical detail, process improvement, systems, and cross-functional partnership.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
- Monthly, quarterly, and year-end closes are accurate, disciplined, and completed on schedule.
- Financial statements, reconciliations, and management reporting are complete, reliable, and decision-ready.
- Controls, policies, and supporting documentation are current, consistently followed, and audit-ready.
- Leaders receive clear analysis of performance, risks, trends, and recommended actions.
- Finance processes become more automated, efficient, and scalable without sacrificing control or service.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Close, Accounting & Reporting
- Help lead the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close process across HDA Truck Pride and affiliated entities, including the close calendar, work assignments, issue resolution, and final review.
- Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, consolidations, supporting schedules, and financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP and company policy.
- Ensure financial and operating reports are timely, complete, internally consistent, and supported by clear explanations of results and variances.
- Maintain the integrity of the general ledger, chart of accounts, master data, and intercompany activity.
Controls, Compliance & Audit
- Maintain and continuously strengthen internal controls over financial transactions, reporting, access, approvals, and reconciliations.
- Keep accounting policies, procedures, and process documentation current; support control testing and remediation when gaps are identified.
- Coordinate audit preparation and fieldwork, including schedules, support, responses, and timely resolution of open items.
- Ensure monthly and quarterly bank-compliance reporting and related covenant calculations are accurate and submitted on time.
- Support tax, regulatory, insurance, and other external reporting requirements in coordination with leadership and outside advisors.
Planning, Analysis & Decision Support
- Partner with the Controller, FP&A, and business leaders on budgeting, forecasting, projections, and scenario analysis.
- Develop and maintain meaningful financial and operating metrics, management reports, dashboards, and ad hoc models.
- Analyze results, margins, costs, working capital, and variances; identify trends, risks, and opportunities; and recommend practical actions.
- Communicate findings clearly to finance and non-finance audiences, connecting accounting results to business performance.
Systems, Data & Process Improvement
- Improve the effectiveness and scalability of accounting processes by reducing duplication, standardizing work, and automating repeatable activities.
- Partner with IT, business owners, vendors, and consultants on ERP, reporting, integration, and workflow initiatives that affect finance.
- Strengthen data quality and reporting governance by clarifying ownership, definitions, controls, and reconciliation points across systems.
- Evaluate new tools and approaches thoughtfully, balancing speed, usability, control, and long-term maintainability.
Team & Organizational Leadership
- Provide day-to-day guidance, review, and backup across the accounting team; help establish clear expectations and consistent operating rhythms.
- Coach team members, share knowledge, and build bench strength through documentation, cross-training, and constructive feedback.
- Lead finance projects from definition through implementation, maintaining clear ownership, timelines, communication, and follow-through.
- Model a service mindset, strong judgment, confidentiality, accountability, and collaborative problem-solving.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation required; active licensure preferred.
- Five or more years of progressive accounting experience, including substantial responsibility for close, reconciliations, financial statements, and analysis.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, internal controls, and core accounting processes.
- Advanced Excel capability and demonstrated experience using ERP and financial-reporting systems.
- Ability to analyze complex information, identify the root issue, and communicate a practical recommendation.
- Strong organization, attention to detail, ownership, and follow-through in a fast-moving environment with competing priorities.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to build productive relationships across functions and levels.
- Collaborative team player who works effectively in a bullpen-style, open office environment and contributes to a communicative, supportive, and highly engaged workplace.
Preferred
- Experience with multi-entity accounting, consolidations, distribution, a cooperative or member-based organization, or a similarly complex operating model.
- Experience improving ERP-enabled processes, reporting, business intelligence, workflow automation, or finance-system integrations.
- Prior experience leading projects, reviewing the work of others, or coaching accounting team members.
