Utility Mapping Services (UMS) is seeking a motivated candidate to fill a position as a SUE Field Technician. This position includes utility locating and/or engineering survey. This position offers an exciting opportunity to be trained in Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE). SUE includes investigating utility infrastructure using multiple highly specialized tools including EM Pipe and Cable Locators, Ground Penetrating Radar, LIDAR, TDEM, MAG equipment and documenting using GPS/GNSS and line-of-sight survey equipment. As a SUE Field Technician, you will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with engineering surveyors, engineers and other utility technicians to identify, designate and map utility installations in both 2-D and 3-D. Knowledge of utility systems is a plus. As a part of the UMS team you will be participating in our efforts to reduce risks and construction costs for our Clients through collecting accurate and detailed utility infrastructure data.
A successful candidate must be willing to learn and possess the aptitude to understand and implement training. In addition, a successful candidate will possess the following characteristics/qualifications:

- A working knowledge or ability to learn utility record interpretation, utility system design and configuration practices
- Proficiency in the use of PC and mobile technology including Windows, Apple and Android operating systems.
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office products
- Possess a valid driver’s license with clean driving record
- Experience managing team members preferred but not required
As a SUE Field Technician, a successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in varied and dynamic environment including both office and field settings (85 to 90% field work, 10 to 15% office) in support of project work in the Midwest and occasionally nationwide.
Environmental and physical requirements include:
- Must be able to lift 75 lbs.
- Must be able to walk on varied terrain for long distances
- Must be able to work outside in all season including freezing and hot conditions
- Must be able to work around moving traffic and within traffic control areas
- Must be able to operate standard passenger vehicles and trucks, including manual transmission
- Must be able to operate basic power tools
- Must be able to use small and large hand tools and tools of the trade
- Must be able to operate/learn to operate EM pipe and cable locating equipment
- Must be able to operate/learn to operate survey equipment
- Must be able to perform repetitive physical tasks
- OSHA certification preferred but not required
- Confined Space Entry certification preferred but not required
- Must be available for weekend and night work as needed
Office and computer requirements include:
- MS Office suite of products, including but not limited to: Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.
- Must be familiar with the navigation and use of cloud based data storage and project management platforms (ex Box.com, DropBox, online project management portals, etc.)
This position will be based out of the UMS office in St. Cloud, MN. Successful candidates must be willing to travel in support of project work throughout the state, nearby states and on occasion throughout the country. The standard work week is Monday – Friday from 7:00am to 4:30pm, however longer hours and overtime (including shifts in excess of 12 hours, weekend and night work) may be required as needed. Candidates can expect to travel up to 85% of the time in support of project work nationwide. While in travel status, employees are provided a daily per-deim in addition to paid lodging and transportation.
