Coax Splicer

Position Description

The Coax Splicer is a skilled and experienced telecom installer who can work independently on complex fiber optic projects, troubleshoot issues in the field, and mentor less experienced crew members. You’ll be responsible for pulling, splicing, testing, and certifying fiber installations for commercial, industrial, and municipal customers, ensuring all work meets Universal Services’ quality and safety standards.

This role is a natural progression from Installation Specialist I, requiring a higher level of technical expertise, problem-solving ability, and leadership in the field. You’ll be trusted to represent Universal Services with professionalism on customer sites and to deliver projects on time and within scope.

Core Responsibilities

Advanced Installation & Fiber Work

Perform fiber optic cable pulling, splicing, termination, and testing for advanced projects
Interpret and execute complex fiber construction plans with minimal supervision
Set up and manage multiple splice locations and termination points on a single project
Troubleshoot fiber optic network issues using advanced headend testing and diagnostic tools
Certify fiber networks for customer acceptance and document test results

Field Leadership & Safety

Lead small crews or assist foremen in coordinating daily installation activities
Train and mentor Installation Specialist I team members in fiber installation best practices
Ensure safety protocols are followed by all crew members on site
Maintain high standards for quality and craftsmanship on all installations

Documentation & Project Coordination

Produce accurate project documentation including as-builts, test results, and closeout packages
Communicate directly with supervisors, project managers, and customers about progress and issues
Coordinate work with other trades and departments to keep projects on schedule

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED (required)
2+ years of telecommunications installation experience (fiber & Coax preferred)
Proficiency in fiber optic & Coax splicing, testing, and troubleshooting
Skilled in interpreting construction plans and splice schematics
Advanced computer skills including specialized telecom software and databases
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Valid, unrestricted driver’s license and current DOT medical card

Physical Demands & Competencies

Work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions
Stand, walk, bend, and lift for extended periods
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work at heights when needed
Comfortable working in confined spaces when required
Leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills in high-pressure situations

Work Schedule

Full-time, non-exempt position
Standard schedule: Monday – Friday, with flexibility for evenings, weekends, or overtime as needed
Year-round work with local travel to job sites
