Job Description:
The Oregon Department of Justice is seeking an experienced Paralegal to join the Civil Enforcement Division in Salem for a hybrid in-office/remote position. The selected candidate will provide paralegal assistance to attorneys in the Civil Recovery Section with an emphasis in providing litigation support. After training is complete this position offers a hybrid schedule which requires a minimum of 2 days in office and up to 3 days remote work, depending on business needs.
The Civil Enforcement Division is generally the Department's plaintiff's civil litigation arm and enforces select criminal laws. The Division consists of five separate sections, each representing the state in regulating conduct, seeking affirmative civil remedies, or recovering money. The Division provides essential services to the public, including legal assistance to the Division of Child Support in the establishment and enforcement of child support orders; regulation and oversight of all charities; enforcement of consumer protection and antitrust laws; enforcement of tobacco agreements and statutes; investigation and prosecution of Medicaid fraud; and taking legal action to recover or protect the state's interest in money or property.
The Civil Recovery Section represents state agencies in civil litigation to recover money owed to the state, to enforce state laws and in probate and protective proceedings. The Division's relationship to the agency is to generate the maximum civil law enforcement impact over the broad spectrum of its responsibilities.

What You Will Do
Paralegals are primarily responsible to perform specifically delegated legal work which, for the most part, would otherwise have to be performed by an attorney. You’ll be entrusted and expected to (in part):
Independently manage a high-volume litigation caseload, including monitoring deadlines; drafting pleadings, motions, orders, judgments, and other court filings while ensuring compliance with approved pleading and practice standards; preparing trial notebooks; organizing case files; and electronically filing documents in both state and federal court.
Review, organize, summarize, and analyze document productions from state agencies, third parties, and opposing parties, utilizing e-discovery platforms such as Relativity, EDT, or Everlaw as needed. Preparing documents for production; preparing responses to requests for admissions.
Maintain case files and case management systems, ensuring accurate recordkeeping, document routing, and monthly reporting.
Conduct legal research on statutes, rules, and procedures to ensure accuracy and compliance in pleadings and filings.
Communicate with clients, opposing parties, and the public, providing case updates, procedural explanations, and responsive guidance.
Perform financial calculations for legal fees, interest, loan balances, cost bills, and documents related to judgments or auctions.
Support discovery and trial preparation, including organizing records, scheduling depositions, managing e‑discovery, and preparing exhibits and trial materials.

Any combination of training and experience that demonstrates experience in legal work, independent judgment, legal terminology principles, concepts, systems, and processes. Experience must include discovery and trial methods and procedures, legal ethics and skill in preparing legal documents, interviewing witnesses and explaining legal issues.
Desired Skills, Experiences, and Attributes
3-7 years of Paralegal experience working in state court.
Ability to organize and prioritize work duties and deadlines.
Experience working independently as a paralegal in all aspects of a civil litigation caseload that includes a variety of matters and legal issues.
Experience drafting complaints, petitions, answers, motions, discovery requests, subpoenas, trial exhibits, orders and judgments.
Experience working in all aspects of civil discovery, including drafting requests for protection, requests for admissions and subpoenas; responding to discovery requests and subpoenas; gathering and reviewing client documents; reviewing documents received from other parties; working in databases such as Everlaw or Relativity.
Experience assisting multiple attorneys in civil litigation matters, including electronic filing in Oregon state courts, trial preparation and courtroom support.
Experiencing interviewing witnesses, deposition preparation and summarizing depositions.
Experience working with clients and third parties, including written or oral communications.
Experience maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive case information.
Proficiency with Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, Relativity and Everlaw.
Experience using an electronic case management system.
Ability to work collaboratively as a team.
Ability to communicate clearly and efficiently.
Dependability, flexibility and adaptability with change and shifting priorities.
Experience in probate and protective proceedings is a plus!
