Full Job Description

A stable and growing manufacturing company in the Salem, OR area is seeking an experienced Lead Diesel Mechanic to oversee the maintenance and repair of diesel-powered equipment while providing leadership and technical guidance to the maintenance team.

Position Overview

The Lead Diesel Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing diesel-powered equipment and supporting plant maintenance operations. This position serves as the shop's technical leader, ensuring equipment reliability, minimizing downtime, promoting safe work practices, and assisting in the coordination of daily maintenance activities.

Key Responsibilities

Lead, mentor, and provide technical support to diesel mechanics and maintenance technicians.
Diagnose and repair diesel engines and related systems, including fuel, cooling, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
Maintain and service diesel-powered equipment such as generators, yard trucks, forklifts, and other mobile machinery.
Perform repairs and preventative maintenance on conveyors, pumps, motors, and other plant equipment.
Coordinate daily maintenance activities and prioritize repairs to support production schedules.
Troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues within a manufacturing environment.
Conduct preventative maintenance programs to maximize equipment uptime and reliability.
Ensure maintenance work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company standards.
Maintain accurate maintenance records, repair documentation, and work orders within the CMMS system.
Assist with parts inventory management, vendor coordination, and equipment planning.
Collaborate closely with production and management teams to support operational goals.
Promote and enforce all safety, environmental, and manufacturing compliance requirements.

Qualifications

5+ years of diesel mechanic and/or industrial maintenance experience, preferably within a manufacturing environment.
Previous experience in a lead, supervisory, or senior technician role preferred.
Advanced mechanical and diagnostic troubleshooting skills.
Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, pneumatics, and industrial equipment.
Experience maintaining plant and production equipment in addition to diesel-powered equipment.
Ability to prioritize work, manage multiple projects, and lead maintenance efforts in a fast-paced environment.
Experience using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) preferred.
Valid driver's license required; CDL is a plus.
Excellent communication and leadership skills.
