Full Job Description

Job Type: Seasonal Full-time (October-March)

The Shelter Manager is responsible for the administration of the day-to-day activities of the Salina Grace Emergency Winter Shelter. This includes but are not limited to the maintenance and repairs of the building, donations and supplies ordering and collection, and the management and training of staff and volunteers. The Shelter Manager is responsible for coordinating guest entry procedures and addressing guest behavioral concerns in a professional and respectful manner. The Shelter Manager, through positive interaction and appropriate accountability, helps create and maintain an atmosphere where guests are both treated with dignity, as well as ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone within the facility.

The Shelter Manager reports directly to the Director of Programs & Community Collaborations (DPCC).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manage the daily operations of the Salina Grace Emergency Winter Shelter (EWS), ensuring a hospitable, professional, and safe environment is provided for the guests and the EWS team.
Supervise and train EWS staff and ensure excellent and compassionate service is provided to guests.
Train staff members as to how to enter and maintain accurate guest information within the HMIS and Apricot database systems.
Ensure that operational procedures are being followed by staff regarding guest’s files (digital and physical)
Familiar with and follows all policies and procedures of Salina Grace. Ensures that all staff knows and are supportive of all policies and procedures.
Ensure all new guests complete required entry paperwork, including the Hold Harmless Agreement.
Ensure all guest’s belongings are secured in the designated storage containers according to established procedures.
Ensure all guests complete the facility’s safety screening process while checking into the facility.
Observe guests for signs of intoxication or impairment, administer breathalyzers, and engage in conversations to assess whether it is safe and appropriate for them to enter the facility.
Communicate facility expectations clearly and consistently to all guests.
Address rule violations through respectful conversations that encourage positive behavior and personal responsibility.
When necessary, ask guests to leave the facility for the day or implement temporary suspensions in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
Respond appropriately to threatening, intimidating, aggressive, or unsafe behavior by directing individuals to leave the facility and notifying the DPCC and law enforcement when appropriate.
Document incidents, behavioral concerns, safety issues, and disciplinary actions according to agency procedures.
Set, maintain, approve, and execute all the EWS staff’s weekly work schedules, complete all payroll paperwork, and keep accurate records within the parameters of the approved budget.
Flexible to fill in where the needs are, including working shifts and satisfying other coverage opportunities and vacancies. “On-Call” to be available to go to work at the EWS when a staff person is ill, or unable to work.
“On-Call” to assist staff members and volunteers working at the shelter to discern how to handle difficult situations.
Establish and maintain effective working relations with the Salina Grace Board of Directors, staff, other agencies in the community, and the public.
Assist guests by answering questions and connecting them with the appropriate services, or community resources that will aid them in moving out of homelessness and instability.
Communicate safety concerns, facility issues, and operational needs to the DPCC.
Responsible for the hiring, training, correction and dismissal of staff members as needed.
Plan, organize, and implement special projects and events as directed. This may involve working with building partners with regards to special situations that may call for the need to adjust the Salina Grace Emergency Winter Shelter’s normal operations.
Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Possess a High School diploma or GED; additional education or experience in social services, security, behavioral health, criminal justice, or a related field is preferred.
Have experience working with persons struggling with homelessness, poverty, addiction, suffering from mental illness, those who possess disabilities, and other significant life challenges.
Be organized and store records in a manner that complies with laws and industry standards.
Possess a firm ability to multitask and achieve goals in an urgent environment.
Be able to administer and enforce policies & procedures consistently while treating all individuals with dignity and respect.
Able to work independently while contributing positively to a team environment
Have experience in utilizing computer programs such as MS Word, Excel, Outlook and are able to learn how to use other computer programs as needed.
Be able to maintain healthy boundaries working with guests.
Be able to be professional, hospitable, and safety-minded in working with guests and other community partners.
Be able to represent the organization professionally, communicating clearly both orally and in writing.
Be able to remain calm and exercise good judgment in difficult, stressful, or crisis situations.
Possess strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills
Able to stand, walk, lift, and perform duties associated with facility operations and guest services.
Able to hold privileged information confidential.
Be free from alcohol and drug dependency and abuse.
Will learn, follow, and uphold all policies of Salina Grace Community Resource Center.

Pay: Up to $20.00 per hour
