Spectrum Academy SPED Teacher (Intensive Behavior)

Location: Spectrum Academy - Pleasant Grove or North Salt Lake Campus

Reports to: Administration

SPED Teacher – Intensive Behavior (Severe/Moderate)

Salary: From $50,216.00 per year and position qualifies for ESA

About Our School: Recently awarded the 2025 Utah Public Charter School of the Year, our school is the premier charter institution in Utah specializing in neurodivergent education. We are seeking a dedicated, specialized Special Education Teacher to lead a self-contained classroom in our STARS building. This classroom is designed exclusively for students with intensive, high-level behavioral, cognitive, and developmental needs.

Strictly Lowered Class Caps: Reduced classroom sizes to ensure maximum safety, individual attention, and manageable caseloads.
On-Call Behavior Team Support: Immediate, direct assistance from our dedicated on-site behavior team members (including BCBAs and Behavior Specialists) who actively step in to assist with escalated students.
In-House Training: Ongoing, job-embedded coaching cycles with an experienced instructional coach specifically focused on classroom management and data collection.

Classroom Focus & Essential Functions: This classroom serves students with significant cognitive and developmental delays who exhibit high-level behaviors, including physical aggression and self-harm. The primary focus of this role is behavioral stabilization through proactive management systems, data-driven crisis de-escalation, and comprehensive safety tracking. Academically, you will provide functional, life skills, and social instruction utilizing the USBE Core Standards and DLM Essential Elements.

Key Responsibilities:

Design and deliver interactive, engaging lessons centered on functional life skills and coping mechanisms utilizing modified, research-based strategies (DLM Essential Elements).
Develop, implement, and monitor intensive Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and individual safety plans.
Utilize advanced crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques to maintain a physically safe environment for students and staff.
Collect and analyze rigorous data on target behaviors, crisis interventions, and IEP goals to track efficacy.
Train, supervise, and coordinate a dedicated team of classroom paraprofessionals in safety protocols and behavior management strategies.
Collaborate actively with your assigned on-site behavior specialists, clinicians, and administrators.
Administer and score standardized alternate assessments as required by the state.
Maintain meticulous student records in compliance with IDEA and safety guidelines, ensuring absolute medical and behavioral confidentiality.

Qualifications & Requirements:

Licensure: Valid Utah Professional or Associate Educator License with a Special Education Endorsement (Severe highly prioritized; Mild/Moderate considered with extensive, direct experience managing severe/aggressive behaviors).
Alternative Pathways: Candidates currently enrolled in an approved APPEL program working toward a Special Education license with a strong behavioral background will be considered.
Experience: Minimum of one year of experience working with children on the autism spectrum or with developmental delays who exhibit severe, high-intensity behaviors.
Expertise: Proven experience in systematic behavioral data collection and crisis intervention techniques (e.g., Safety-Care, CPI).
Preferred: Experience in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles and leading teams of classroom aides in high-stress environments.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

Regularly required to speak, hear, stand, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, or balance.
Must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
Requires the mental resilience and physical agility to respond immediately, calmly, and safely to the unique needs of students in a high-intensity, highly stressful setting.
This role involves physical crisis management, blocking, and the safety containment of highly aggressive or self-injurious behaviors, which carries an inherent risk of physical strain or injury. Comprehensive safety training, team support, and emergency behavior team interventions are continuously provided to mitigate these risks.
